I'm living in Seoul and am told that I must report to Busan police dept due to them getting a recruiters info on over 100 other foreign teachers who had worked for them with bank account numbers showing money deposited. 1st offense was a 500,000 won fine only. Anyone know what penalty the 2nd one holds? The immigration web site is vague at best. Most of the 100 teachers are supposably living closer to Busan than Seoul is why the location for investigation is Busan??

What did you do? Why not be honest and tell the whole story and shed all information so people can really give advice.
Your 'story' and information is too vague for anyone to offer anything remotely helpful. |

Tell us how the recruiter got busted.
It's good to see recruiters keep their recruits' information private. Good to see that when a teacher leaves a job, his recruiter destroys all information on him/her. It's always reassuring to know the paper trail ends at my recruiter when the job is done and he no longer has any business keeping any of my obsolete information.
Your post has definitely made me feel all comfy inside knowing my privacy will be maintained.
Jesus. They even found out bank account numbers?
This is no surprise, though. I once had to get a copy of my passport made at a little rinky-dink mom and pop version of Kinkos in Seoul. The pop scanned the thing, saved it to his hard drive, and then transferred it to my USB thumb. I was on my way out the door when it hit me...I turned around and told his ass to wipe my copy off his hard drive, as he didn't need it on his drive. If I hadn't done that, it'd probably still be on there.
Coverage of the tail is the best policy when it comes to your private information in SK!

Here's a serious recommendation - stop doing illegal work... maybe you won't get busted a third time. |

I think you need to answer 'why does your recruiter have your bank account information'?
The most my recruiter has ever had was my diploma or CRC and my transcripts... anything else would be too much.
and yea, if you were doing illegal work then sucks you got busted. Now face the law. GG |

One more thing I'll add...
I agree with a poster above and say your thread opener is a bit vague. I have to assume you used to be associated with this recruiter.
Be sure to send your him a Thank-You card. You need to thank him for his negligence. His screw-up just got you busted, and you're not even in the picture anymore. |

Vague or TROLL
So, this guy is doing privates, and they pay him to his bank account instead of cash in person? And, there is a way that money put in a bank account can be proven to be for private teaching? I think this is all a bunch of horse..... |

I think you're onto something, Chicken.
Korea is probably like anywhere else...The powers know about all the illegal activities but only bust those they choose to. |

I love it when the goes 'on'. K-land is just like the west... except the cost-benefit analysis is calculated from 'first person singular' perspective.

Not necessarily. I know a few people who are foolish enough to be paid by direct deposit for the illegal kindy jobs they are doing.
I also know one guy who was busted by the police (not immigration) for teaching illegally. The hagwon owner made the problem go away, and this guy was merely warned, told to leave the country and come back legally on an E2. He's now back, on an E2, and working a bunch of extra jobs illegally and making a ton of cash.
The bottom line is this: there are no teeth to the immigration laws and it does not surprise me to see 500,000 as a fine for the first offense. Following the law is like walking by cash lying on the ground and not picking it up. Only the foolish don't have a second job.
For the record, my second job is legal. |

Yes, and when you fill out that little questionnaire and it says "Have you ever been deported from a country for violating immigration or other laws?"
What do you say? No? Do you lie? |

Who's being deported? In two years in Korea, I have never heard of a single person who was deported. Occasionally, I've heard a rumor of a fine, but that's it. A rumor. Immigration does NOT actively try and find illegal workers. I'd say the odds of getting busted for illegal work is about 1 in a thousand, and if you do, you'll get a fine, probably no record. The odds of getting busted twice are likely 1 in a million.
Remember, even the guy busted by the police wasn't deported. He wasn't even fined. He was told don't do it again. He hasn't missed a beat and he's pulling in 6 million a month, and has been for over a year now.
Deported. Gimme a break. |

And eventually, attitudes like yours will get someone's knickers in a twist over it, and they'll start actively looking, and actively deporting people. Two years in Korea, you say? And why is it that you had to submit a CRC last time you re-upped, but you didn't have to when you came here the first time?
Because one guy allegedly screwed up, and a lot of people got pissed.
One guy. That's all it takes.
Will it be you? |
