| Regarding cabbies, is it normal for them to charge a fee on top of what's on the meter? A couple nights ago I had to go from Seoul (Samgakji) to Anyang (Beomgye) and the cabbie told me he'd "only" charge me 3k won on top of the metered rate. I didn't understand why... was it cuz it was a far distance, or the time of night (1am)? |

I've had a similar occurrence, got a cab across the city I live in to a place I hadn't been before. Turns out it was closer than I thought and the meter only read about 2500won but he pressed a button on the dash thingy and it jumped upto over 4000. It wasn't a long trip and we hadn't gone through a toll. My only guess was that it was a call out fee. |

There is an extra fee for going outside of the city. I used to cab it from Nowon, which is in the north east part of Seoul, to Uijungbu, which is a 10 minute cab ride, just outside "Seoul's" city limits. I always got dinged for taking the cabby out of Seoul. |

I usually let the drivers keep the change. I don't like carrying change, and they can keep the 900 won ($0.70 today).
My husband doesn't tip, and insists on getting the correct change back. Some drivers are surprised he wants the change, and almost offended.
I've only had one driver refuse a tip. |

Accounting (one chick and an abacus) has switched us all over to T-Money cards now, so I don't tip cab drivers and never will again.
I wonder if this -- knowing they'd lose tip money with the introduction of T-Money card readers -- is why taxis were so slow to install them.
Anyway, I don't care! It's plastic all the way now, baby!

| I hand them the next chunnun up. But I live near a military base. It's good karma. Tip the coins, people. Always tip the coins if you're out in the sticks. |

Also, I don't think anyone, ever, in my travels, anywhere... has ever refused a tip. |

Hahah "backbone" ... The fare to the next town over for me is 13,000. I've had drivers do it in 10. Do I tip the extra chunnun? You betcha. |

| I have had both drivers refuse a tip and others just take it (cuz I'm a foreigner?). Depends on how he drove if I ask for the change back or not, in the latter case. |

Sometimes taxi drivers will feign reluctance to accept a tip in the same way that I'll feign going for my wallet and making a contribution when a generous ajosshi student of mine takes us out for dinner. It's just done out of politeness and if you press it the taxi driver will happily accept the tip.
How about having taxi drivers actually round the fare down. I've only been ripped off by a taxi driver once (a dodgy van driver at Incheon International Airport), but I've had numerous occasions when, though the meter reads something like 5400w, the driver only asks for 5000. I always insist on paying the full fare though. |
