Geeze... can't they have some originality?
They just copied the US Embassy web site and tweaked the ending.
Next thing you know, they'll all be trying to talk like Americans!
(no oat and aboat -- and please spare the Southern USA and inner-city USA accent mentions.. it seems to be your only defense). |

Well that's more than the Australian Gov... Korea makes their "dangerous to visit" countries list but that's not because of the devious hagwon owners...it's the dangerous roads!!!
Edit: Just checked and they do actually provide a page of info for people teaching English, though nothing enlightening. |

with their government after something bad happened? I doubt that many simply because we don't go to government when we have problems- which creates the question-"How can they say minority?"
I often find that "level-headed" paragraphs are a desperate attempt in not seeming "extreme." Isn't that the Canadian way in government? Not seeming extreme. Perhaps a driver behind why it takes 10 or more years to pass pharmaceuticals already passed in so many other countries.
Anyway- I had lots of bad experiences and never ran to our government and I know tons of other people who didn't go to an embassy either. "Minority." Can it be true? |

Why would people go to a embassy? It's not like they (the Canadian embassy) can intervene in any way between a hakwon director and his employee. |

Not to be picky, but while an embassy won't not get involved in contractual disputes between hagwon owners and their employees, the Australian embassy says...

And I'm pretty sure the Canadian embassy would do the same. |

Ain't gonna wade through all that sheeyat, but when I got to the part where salaries averaged 1.5 I knew it was out of date. And when it said Hagwon jobs have three to four months holiday I thought it was written by someone who has not even been here.
Solid journalism! |

As for your passport, the Canadian passport says right inside the front cover that it is the property of the Canadian Government.
So if in my opinion, if someone says they must hold it then tell them no, otherwise you'd have to report it as stolen.
A good thing to do is to photocopy the signature and photo pages of your passport so you can get another issued easily if your passport it lost or taken from you.
Cheers and keep your passport! |

Might want to go back and read it again. It says the "three to four months holiday" is in relation to working at a university, not at hagwon.
Though it looks like it was written three to five years ago with regards to the wages cited (when I showed up in 2001, I knew a few people who were working for 1.5 a month). While it would be nice if they updated it every few months with the latest and greatest "average wages", it's not really that important. |

My bad. I meant in terms of a contract dispute. The passport is a whole another issue. |

The past official USA government board used to have a much stronger warning than the Canadian one (the new version is much more toned down). I got the feeling that they had lots of folk going to their embassy to complain and so posted the negative version in response to people tying up their phone lines (an assumption on my part).
Anyway- the Canadian Embassy puts in their blog "minority"- refering to how many people get burnt. While the one the Americans had a while back didn't attempt to state percentages in regard to majority/minority- the flavor was lots of people got burnt (again- not this new information page the US governement has posted- it's a toned down version). So- I just assumed that people were going there/phoning lots. An unfounded assumption on my part. Just a hunch.
My point- if the Canadian Embassy is using the term "minority" by how many people are screaming on their phone- they might as well forget it because I don't think Canadians typically go screaming to their government and so the numbers would be few. Canadians don't expect much from their government these days. |
