Pork, tofu, chicken, and eggs are all reasonably cheap sources of protein here. So is fish. One of the best meals I make is whole grilled fish. I have one of those grill pans, and I buy the pre-gutted whole fish (they score, scale, and even salt it for you), rub it down with olive oil, pop it on the grill, squeeze some lemon on it, and viola. Friggin' delicious, and like 2,500 per fish. Don't even get me started on clams and mussels. Yum.

Tell me about the grill pan. What is it?

I eat like a king for very little... but I have an oven and like to cook. I also make my own lunch.

Same here.

Draz, the grill pan is like nothing I've ever seen before. It's not like your standard European ridged frying pan type thingie. It's more like a rectangular UFO. It clamps shut and there's a rack in the middle. It was 14,000 won at a home goods store. It's weird but really awesome.

Just stay away from always having western stuff...except olive oil. Gotta have that.
Twice a year olive oil goes on 50% sale. clearing out stock. We buy 20 or 30 liters at a time for 5,300 a liter.
Buy wahts' in season. You can buy potatoes and tomatoes in the winter, but you have to take out a loan to do it. Save that stuff for the summer. This weekend we're going to have our first chips and salsa feast. I make a wicked salsa, and we'll use a dozen tomatos...cheap. We will also put up 30 tomato sauce dinners at a time.
Make stuff for yourself. Like spaghetti sauce. Anybody acn make meatballs, and theyr'e fun.

Rameon is ok.....if you tweak it. We like those spicy beef soups. We fry a little thin sliced beef (50grams?) to make a crude deglace, add some greens (1000won), some of those potato noodles (2000won), and a couple of chile peppers. Sometimes we cube some tofu into it. All in, two packages of that stuff tweaked will feed us 3 for maybe 8000won.

make pancakes. make french toast. make fresh veggie omellettes. easy stuff to make. costs very little, and is a very nice change from the monotony of torturing yourself to save money.

the problem with torturing yourself, is that invariably we end up splurging, and all that savings gets blown away by the 50,000won steak and potato dinner with the 6 pack of imported beer.

family of four. I take home 2.35. We save + 1mill and eat very well.

And you just put it on the stove? I'll have to look around for something like that.
