I have been here since Sept. 08 and I have shown one at the end of the first semester. I had the idea of showing the kids a movie every 5 class as long as they had been good. (I have no other means of motivation. Sad but true.) However my main co-teacher said it was a bad idea and I was a baby and stopped. Just curious about how other people do movies. |

This doesn't say much about my manhood or management skills but some of my classes manhandle me and put videos on themselves. So films get played quite a lot.
However my smaller classes with a coteacher I always end the semester with a movie. This time I'll be doing giving a conversation test to two students at a time outside the class while the movie is playing inside.
And speaking of movies, can anyone find Korean subs for "the Outsiders?" I'd really like to show that movie. |

0. Elementary doesn't have the downtime like middle and high schools. |

Usually after finals, but I am showing them this
http://eflclassroom.ning.com/video/wallace-and-grommit-close
because they are quite motivated and we are getting through the book too fast. So, we watch this and do the activities every 3rd week or so. It has activities so it isn't as bad as just vegging out in front of a movie. |

last 2 weeks of July and last weeks of Dec, after final exams is my basic strategy as well.
I was wondering why the students were unhappy with me last July when I first started and kept teaching till the end of the semester hahaha
figured that out in December
I may show them a movie or two outside of those slots, and I show them movies more frequently in my after school class, especially if they've been "good" for a while. Now that I've found a kid who can download me basically any movie I want for free and with Korean subtitles, I am going to use them perhaps a little more. |

My higth schoolers brains shut off once the semester's final exams are written. So movie time it becomes. |

I have been here since Sept 08, as well. Last semester, I played one movied, starting it just before final exams and somehow stretching it out till the end of the semester (I was at a loss of what to do last semester). This semester, I played Dark Knight for 2 lessons in the middle of the semester to do a speaking test (which went very well), and I'll do it again to the movie I played last semester, Bourne Identity, starting next week. The kids loved it, and I have all new kids this semester. It plays over 3 lessons if you split it into 3 sections of about 35-40 mins. I have it down to a science: print out some "question sheets" about the movie, go over them before the movie, and answer them afterwards. |

espoir, that avatar is getting people in trouble. It makes a thread look like we're browsing porn sites. LMAO!
I anticipate putting our new HD super bright video projectors to use next month. They're so bright, you can use fairly small font and it's crystal clear instead of breathing chalk dust. We also got new oil chalk recently where it's not dusty.
Maybe some cartoons? Maybe Wall-E? Maybe something else with lots of action and slapstick humor? |

None. Maybe 10% of the students at this school could comprehend a Tom and Jerry cartoon...if it wasn't in Korean. Sad and depressing, but true. |

Same situation at my school. Play the movie with Korean subs. THey still are "listening" to English. |

I show educational movies sometimes. The students always have a list of comprehension questions to answer or it leads into another activity.
Even when we watch a movie 'just for fun' like an episode of the simpsons after testing I still pause the movie (no subtitles) and have the students summarize what they've seen so far, tell me about the different characters, etc.
Just think of some way to actively engage the students at some point and showing movies is a nice break for everyone (especially the kids who, let's be honest, if we had to study like they do we'd probably bash our own heads in to make it stop). |
