I just want to get a few things straight. Now I am coming to the end of my second year with SMOE. My final pay should include, final months pay 2.5mil, security deposit 500 thousand (minus final months bills) and 2 months of severance 5mil. Correct??? I have previously worked in hagwons and they have always paid the severance at the end of each 12 month period but when I renewed with SMOE there was no severance so I assume its coming when I finish Is this correct???

You are 99% correct. You are owed 2 years of severance, your last paycheck, and your 500,000 deposit (minus any remaining bills). You could get an airfare reimbursement if you didn't use a GTR. However, many people get some of these things after the last paycheck, like airfare money and the deposit because they wait and make sure you paid all your bills.

And be sure to visit the pension office to get your money from them.

2.5 Mil in your 2nd year at SMOE? Holy crap.

If your housing allowance is included in your pay, then you DON'T get that allowance attached to your Severance.

I have a very hard time believing someon in their 2nd year at SMOE is making 2.5 mil, base.

Bibbitybop, thank you. I woke up this morning doubting myself about this for some reason. Maybe it was the thought that if I worked for 4 years that sum would be 10mill....it just doesn't sound right, quit you job and they give you 10mill.

pkang0202, just cause it took you seven years between graduating high school and finishing VCU doesn't mean it takes everyone this long to get their ish together. Level C for two years.

Level D. Base of 2.4. +Ridonkulous overtime hourse. Finishing my first year.

If are certified with experience it bumps it up. As well it should.

good luck to the OP sorting it out. Let us know how it turns out, in a few years I'll probably be posting something similar.

Why didn't you get bumped to level B after the first year? Just curious. I was under the impression that you automatically go up a level every year.

I'm not sure why. I was not so happy about not getting a rise, part of the reason why this is my last year with them. I asked and they said you have to work there 3 years at that level to get bumped. I looked at their scale and thats what it said. Also, my supervisor recently said we must do 3 weeks of camp this summer, orders straight from the top. Just awful.

You dont go up a level each year, but some do, it depends on your qualifications. I am a level C, and next year i for sure go up to a level B, however If I take an ESL teaching course I can bump up to a level A.

Not going to do it though, cant be bothered to take 120 hours of lessons when I can make the pay raise in a quarter of the hours by teaching additional programs within SMOE

AMMENDMENT, I forgot that the rules had changed for pay scale ( it took Pkangs cheeky email to realise it) So I am not sure what pay range I would qualify for, when I re-sign

Category C : 2.5 million won per month
At least TWO (2) full years of English teaching experience at accredited institutions with Master's degree in TESOL/TEFL or in English education.
A teacher certification with specialization in English education with at least THREE (3) full years of English teaching experience at accredited institutions.
Employed as Category D at the SMOE for TWO (2) full years.

So, according to SMOE's own payscale, you can NOT be category C (2.5 million) in your 2nd year. You have to be in SMOE 2 FULL years, before you can be Category C. So, you should be in your 3rd year of SMOE to be Category C.

I was going by those rules stated in SMOE's payscale rules. Excuse me for basing my assumption on the rules that SMOE has posted

On a side note, I was part time at VCU for a few years helping my parents run their store so that they didn't fall over from working 60 hours a week. Or, would you prefer I get my "ish together" by thinking only of getting my degree instead of helping out the people who gave birth to me.

Hey PKANG, before you come across as a total moron telling me and hightop what we can and can not be making, I would advise you to look at the site again and see when it was last updated.

I can assure you that I am in my first year with SMOE, and am a Level C Making 2.5 million won. Thats because when I signed my contract with them in February those were NOT the rules, they conveniently changed in March or April of this year, and are applicable for THIS hiring round in September

I do not have a masters in Education, I have a bachelor's in Education,

Imagine that, a major organisation changing policy when they arent happy with it.

HMMMMMMM

They also made major changes to the flight reimbursement policy, the vacation schedules and payouts, as well as a mandate that ALL camps be 3 weeks in length.

But you know what they say when you assume right?

And as stated youd be wrong.

I am in my FIRST year with SMOE and making 2.5 base with overtime hours and housing allowance my pay is about 3.2 ( course 400 of that goes to my apartment)

As for those level requirements, I believe only ONE of them needs to be met for a teacher to be assigned to that category, not ALL of them. For example, I've been at Level A (2.7 mil/month) from my first year. I must say though that the list is written in a confusing kind of way, so I'm sure it was an honest mistake.

When I signed it was also one that had to be met. After reading a few threads on here it seems SMOE is making a few changes, 3 week camps, housing requirements in the contract etc etc, that are not popular. One change I wish they would hurry up and make is replacing the GTR/delayed by 3 month airticket refund with a lump sum payment. They could just offer no ticket over and no return and replace it with say 2 or 3 million cash at the end of each one year contract. It would encourage people to finish their contracts.

you are in luck then, that is EXACTLY what they are doing

Resigning bonus is 2.0 Million ( not a flight home ) you can ue the money when and how you see fit

Flying Home or here you get 1.3 million each way.
takes effect for anyone starting thier contract NOW, for me it doesnt work this way ( signed feb 2009) i get a ticket home in February ( which I will take) and then I will get my 1.3 million home when I leave in Feb 2011)

They are also disucssing making it a standard that your re signing vacation MUST be taken in February. Too many teachers are not taking it and then moaning about Summer and Winter camps because they are trying to bank up 5 weeks of vacation and screw the camps. They are prety sick of the hassle with this, and I can't balme them.

No I think final authority will come to the schools, but they want to have tis rule on the books so that teachers can stop using the ignorance card
