So your sense of superiority comes from the fact that you relate to Koreans better than I do? I guess the whole "insecurity" vibe doesn't bother you as much. Good for you. I am very sensitive to it.

As I said, it's a SAD thing that I feel pity / superiority to Koreans. I wish things were much much different. But if that were the case, I suppose none of us would be here...

PS I've been here 6 years. I'm going by overall average interactions. Of course, there have been exceptions. But not too many...that's why I felt it prudent to post.

What exactly do you think prudent means?

Let me use dictionary.com: "prudent": 1. wise or judicious in practical affairs; sagacious; discreet or circumspect; sober.
2. careful in providing for the future; provident: a prudent decision. Synonyms: 1. sensible. 2. economical, thrifty, frugal.

I felt it prudent to post because I feel I have some experience in the matter. I have given the matter careful thought.

And what exactly are you trying to say? I used "prudent" incorrectly? Maybe it wasn't the best word to use, oh sage verbositeur.

MAYBE you're saying my misuse of "prudent" gives cause to disregard my argument...in which case...pfft. Try looking at the bigger picture babe. I didn't proofread my paragraph that closely. And I think my point was made. Prudently. Cool

RIght, the hermit kingdom did not even have soap until Japan brought it over. That is really intelligent, now they have cars, planes, phones, aircon, chocopies, and 99percent of everything you see in society (except kimchi and that under the floor heating that was actually used in the ancient east)
I guess they are so intelligent that they had to wait for all of these great things to get invented, Idea

umm...america had nothing until the immigrants brought everything over. what's your point? based on raw/pure IQ, koreans are superior. studies and test scores prove it.

a high IQ isn't correlated with the need to attack and imperialize other nations...but then again, i'm arguing with a lame ESL teacher who probably failed his history classes.

Would those be the Europeans you are referring to? Oh of course not. The Europeans only raped, pillaged, and brought disease. Only non white immigrants ever contributed anything positive to the US, because as we all know nothing good can ever come from a white person. That goes triple for those knucklehead loser teachers in Korea that are nothing more than a stain on the moral and ethnic fabric of the country.

A person is supposed to have an IQ of at least 120 to get through college.
If that is true, then we have IQ's at least 14 points higher than the average Korean.

well, it's not true. i've met my share of idiots with no-name 3rd/4th tier "college" degrees. just take a look at some of the posters on this board...

but if you want to fantasize that is indeed the truth...that would mean that your IQ would be 22 points higher than the average american...but needed to come out to korea to find a job teaching a skill none other than your mother tongue....while the average american can find a job back home. gee, that's smart.

take your pick...

Digsydinner,

I am bit confused. You are living in Korea but are from the US. You continually berate foreign English teachers yet here you are posting on a forum supposedly devoted to the exact demographic you so despise.

I take it you aren't a teacher but rather a highly paid foreign professional on a 6 figure salary. You are probably posting on this forum via your Blackberry because undoubtedly you are on the golf course closing multimillion dollar deals with investors. Despite your lofty duties and responsibilities you find the time to descend down to our level and bestow us with your wisdom. For that, all of us losers owe you and others like you a huge debt of gratitude. Perhaps one day we can become half as successful and enlightened as yourself, but I doubt it.

If you are in fact a teacher I don't envy your students.

err...do you feel better now after that post?

i have serious respect for my teaching job here in korea. however, no matter how hard i work, its some of you dumb nuts going about doing knuckleheaded things that ruin our images. yes, the koreans have their negative stereotypes on us...and it sure doesn't feel good when you've done nothing wrong. what's wrong with pointing them out here on this board and calling the absurdity some of us foreigners engage in but not admit to?

in addition, i probably have more native korean friends than foreign friends. i find that seeing things from their perspective actually helped me adjust living here. i absolutely love it here...and get along with everyone. i do not have any issues with the people, nor the culture. people who come across here on Dave's and just complain ad nauseum just come off as ignorant...and hence, deserve a slap of reality.

maybe i'm alone in this crusade...but one day, i'd like to see the reputation of english teachers here go up a notch above bottom-feeder.

Maybe you could start by working on your own attitudes. You come across as someone who has a huge chip on their shoulder and is very judgmental......not exactly good attributes in a teacher. It would be quite admirable if you put as much energy into your teaching and your students as you do here putting down others.

my students are just fine. no need to worry. i am extremely well received and have actually had dinner at several of their homes. my boss cannot be any more satisfied...as i also help with the marketing and recruiting for the hakwon.

not judgmental...i see the absurdity on a daily basis.
it's up to a point where it's embarrassing. to me, koreans have every reason to put down the english teachers here based no their behavior.

the non-stop complaints here only proves the immaturity of most.

Pointing out absurdity is one thing; being judgmental and condescending are something else. Do you really think berating teachers on this forum is really going to help your cause?

Are you one of the foreign teachers who hates other foreign teachers because you see a reflection of yourself? That perhaps by seeing another foreign teacher you feel less special and unique?

Perhaps you could petition the Korean government to require 100 plus hour, on site (not online), TEFL courses with observed teaching practice. Given that you take teaching so seriously I assume you attended one of these courses prior to stepping foot in a classroom?? Requiring a CELTA/TEFL cert is one step that would have a very positive outcome and weed out a lot of the people you are talking about. The problem is that you are blaming foreigners for bad hiring decisions. Do you have any ideas or would you rather just hurl insults while trying to make yourself feel "superior"?

i've met my share of TEFL certs who are morons as well...what's your point? i don't see that as a solution. it starts with the attitude. a teacher without a cert, but with a genuine desire to educate is far more valuable. newbs and even folks who've been in this country a long time but still haven't adjusted their poor attitudes will only further perpetuate the downward spiral. you can't change someone's moronic behavior without pointing out how ridiculous it is. hence, my posts... like it or leave it. up to you.
