YOU CAN PICK UP HANGUL IN TWO HOURS. EXCLUDING 어 (EO) AND SOME OF THE COMPOUND VOWELS, PRONUNCIATION'S A BREEZE.
Pick up a book. Learn some phrases. Take a free class (they're offered everywhere, you know?). Make some Korean friends. Ask for help. Get into a routine.
You seriously embarass yourself when you come to this country and expect to be catered to.
I don't care what your excuse is. 'I just don't care for the language' or 'I don't have time' or 'I don't need to know it.'

| But if I get off my lazy ass and learn Korean, I'll be able to understand the derogatory crap they're saying about me in FRONT of my back, and I may get pissed off and leave for good. |

The people I've known who've regarded Koreans as being very polite are usually people who haven't picked up any of the language. Remember the hagwon jockey who thought that his students were 'too polite' for his liking but he didn't know what banmal was? There's a good reason why what's written in the KH and KT often has a very different ring from the Hanguel press. |

WEll I have been running through the streets, grabbing people by the shoulders and shrieking 'speak 'Merikan!' into their faces, but such a well-reasoned appeal as the OP makes has totally changed my life.
Although since there is only one 'jerk' I suppose this thread may not be directed at me. Out of the thousands of users of Dave's I wonder who this one person is? |

| Another reason I wouldn't bother to learn it is as soon as I get deep into acquiring a vocabulary, the immigration office will change the E-2 laws again and start excluding people with brown or red hair or green eyes or size 12 shoes or ride a bike with a frame taller than 56 cm. |

I agree with the sentiment, but seriously, some people aren't here to learn Korean or even to teach kids. It was their only option, so you're not going to reach those people.  And there are some people who are awful at languages and who will probably never learn Korean or hangul. |

Just expressing a sentiment that (at the time) threatened to overwhelm. Got it out of my system.
Now I can go back to being productive...(lesson planning, researching, studying Korean).
Some folks on Dave's are ignorant beyond belief, though. Just sayin'. |

Cool. I'm glad to hear there are people who are interested in Korea and not just chasing skirts/pants.

I'm not in Korea yet...but I wouldn't be coming if I didn't plan to study Korean. Asian Languages/Literatures was one of my majors in college, but I focused on Japanese. I want to expand!
So, now back to watching K-drama and listening to Epik High! |

While I agree with the sentiment (in some cases) I don't think it's as cut and dry as all that either.
I've been here 8 years and my Korean is barely past a grade 3 or 4 level, and I've been studying my ass off.
Korean is extrememly hard to learn (at least for me) and Koreans themselves don't encourage learning much when they laugh in my face at my poor attempts at their language. 
Moreover, the study materials I've found are not exactly the best. I'm sure there are better books and materials out there, but I haven't found them.
I actually had a tutor who tried to scold me for not knowing more than I do (after being here 6 + years) while at the same time she had spent more than 10 years studying English. I asked her how long she had studied English and she turned beet red.
I think Koreans often don't realize how difficult it is to learn their language.
Expecting Westerners to pick it up in 6 months to a year is pretty naive.
(although there certainly are exceptions) |

I'm not sure if I'm awful at languages or not. I always thought I was. I've been putting a small amount of effort in, but I've never been good at memorizing personally irrelevent information which is basically what learning a language is, at least in the early stages before you can actually talk to someone.
Still plugging away at it once in awhile and I do notice minor improvements. I'm reading a lot faster than I was three months ago, and I pick out words I know more often. I don't have to think about it when I'm in a store and am told the price, I just understand it.
Kind of want to take a class, but I'm worried it would be like when I studied French in Canada. I couldn't keep up.  |

Any L2 will be tough, especially if the learner isn't in the L2 environment. Those who claim a specific language is 'easy' are those who believe you're fluent after learning to utter a few token phrases. If you can merely say 'hello' in English, then you KNOW it, according to them.
I know students in both Korea and Thailand who've studied English six years and still don't even know their vowels.
