My exercise routine basically consists of swimming at local pool for an hour at least four or five times a week.

I hear you guys. I hate Korean summer, it's just to darned hot and humid so I too need to focus on getting in shape.

Not so I can look good on the beach as I'm more likey to be at a poker table or in the cinema - but to literally be able to function in this heat without feeling like a zombie.

As it is It's only June and I'm taking 2 cold showers a day...

Anyway my suggestion if you want to strengthen up your core, get flexible and strong, gain energy, stamina and great shape is - Ashtanga (some people call it 'power yoga.') yoga.

I used to hit the gym and the road but there were several things I didn't like about it

1. Too pumped up to sleep afterwards

2. Sore muscles next day

3. Fatigued nervous system post training

4. A feeling of being 'wired' a lot of the time and a lot more agressive

The great thing about yoga is that after about four 1 hr sessions I can see my stomach muscles, have barely any fat on me, my muscles are long and toned, my posture and bearing are great and my body generally feels great.

Not only that but probelms 1, 2, 3 and 4 are non existant with yoga and you can do it in your own home (I use an easy to follow dvd) and it's great for your emotional health too.

I swear to god yoga is the Best discovery I've ever made

Update:

Yesterday I saw a specialist about my knee problems and turns out that I have patellar (?) tendinitis in both knees. Sparkling!!! Crying or Very sad

Dr. OC I see you have come across an old friend of mine. He can be a bit testy at times. Rest take some anti-inflame stuff fish oil, glucosamine, alieve etc... If you take any thing liek alieve or asprin make sure you drink alot of water. Also, eating dark greens like spinach can also help with the acidic levels in your body which might help with the tendinitis. Try finding a paterlar strap (the little funny looking bands you see basketball players wear) or you can make them from athletic prewrap.

Your knees have given you trouble and I spent about 14 hrs in a clinic/hospital with kidney stones the other day. They took about 40,000 x-rays so I expect to turn green like the hulk soon. The Dr. said it's funny how a small stone, a little over 1/2 cm, can bring such a big man to his knees. Something always seems to be in the way of me lifting.

I'll have to check out this power yoga stuff; maybe it isn't just for granola eating hippies after all Razz

If anyone is interested, the UD2 I mentioned a few pages back (link at bottom) is going well for me. It's basically a form of carb cycling, but there's a lot more to it than that

Update: I've got an inflamed tendon. Fark this running nonsense... never again...

Went to the Chinese medicine place that was a waste of time, now I've been to a proper doc and got to rest for two weeks can't do much except stay in the APT and drink.

I was down to 100kg as well Sad

Thanks for the advice man. Doc has me applying an anti-inflammatory gel on my knees every day and hot packs about 3 times a day (still need to buy hot packs). He also wants me to get therapy everyday at a clinic but I told him that's gonna be kinda tough 'cuz of my schedule, so I'm gonna aim for 3 or 4 days a week. The therapy consists of electro shock, hot packs, and some type of knee massage. They did it at the hospital when I first got diagnosed and it felt pretty good. Not sure if I need it though. They seem to love hospitals here. What do you think? Will I be ever be able to get back to 5X5??? I'm so disappointed. My co-workers just don't understand.... Crying or Very sad

Yea you are capable of the 5x5. The tendonitis will go away after treatment and rest. Don't worry about it. But, if you don't rest it will be painful and annoying. Good Luck after I get over these kidney stones I am gonna start on mine again.

Starting from last Monday, I walked 30 minutes every day. For the last few years, I've walked 30 minutes, four times a week.

In one week, I can see my stomach looks a little more compact than before.

After a few weeks, I will see what I am likely to look like in future.

You're not gonna become athletic from walking. You need to do something more rigorous to get that heart rate up.

It is brisk walking. I read walking quickly has the same benefit as jogging.

Tonight, I stayed up later than usual and this new routine has taken its toll.

I ate a whole pizza in one go. I usually eat 3 meals a day, this was my 4th meal of the day. Laughing

It seems an increase in exercise by 37% a week requires more food intake.

I should go to bed at the normal time, to avoid immense hunger, or just eat grapes next time.

I am slim but not thin, I couldn't believe I ate a whole pizza in less than 20 minutes. I think this proves the new exercise regime is having a positive effect. Laughing

ok, I have a question.

For the last 2+ years I have been working out fairly hard. I was overweight initially and diet plus the execise got me to a healthy weight for the first time in my adult life. Since then, it's been for maintenance. My regimen is something like this:

At least twice a week: squats, lunges (with weights), row, push ups, abs exercises, biceps and triceps exercises. Then 30-45 mins of cardio with my heart rate in the cardio zone. I do the cardio at least 4 times a week.

The cardio has usually been on the treadmill, either running, walking, but slogging it uphill at at least 6.7km/h, or a combo. I used the treadmill cos I could watch the TV at the gym. The other machines don't have TVs.

Now I have an iPod touch and I can do my cardio wherever. I have been replacing the treadmill with 30 mins on the stepper (level 6 - gets my heart rate up), and I've also been leaving the squats and lunges out of my routine. I'm a woman, and even when I didn't work out, I had really muscular thighs (without this necessarily translating to strength), which I hate. Add that to a tendency to carry my remaining fat between my belly button and knees and you can see why I don't really want my thighs to get too much bigger.

My question is, is this a good idea? Am I short changing my self by replacing both the treadmill and leg exercises with the stepper? Time is important to me, and while I don't mind going to the gym, I do like to try to minimise the time it takes out of my day. Anyway I can streamline my workout is a plus.

i dont know if it has been mentioned before, but u should try out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-intensity_interval_training maximal caloric loss in short amount of time

its very tough at first, but the benefits are awesome. it can be applied to running or even weight lifting

I agree. I tried interval training along with cardio and sprints a couple days a week a few summers ago because I wanted six pack abs. Within a few weeks i was lean and toned. I stopped doing it though 'cuz I was too light and I wanted to bulk up. I think I might've said this already. Haha.

yeah it sucks to overshoot your goal. i did it one time, and tried to gain more weight, and almost ended up back at my pre-exercise weight. during dieting i ate such crappy tasting food that once i ate "normal" food again, it was hard to go back
