Okay, we all know that horrible bastard deserves to be in jail for what he did. He deserves to rot, rot, rot in jail.

However, you're still not answering me how some guy randomly goes to a hospital with a 10-year-old that is not his child and somehow the hospital manages to turn them away?

What?

Was the child speaking? Obviously not or else the kid would have easily told them, "He is not my dad!"

Anyway, about ambulances, I heard there are two kinds of ambulances, one for "dead" people and one just to take people to the hospital (the paramedics aren't allowed to do anything to the passengers)

Is this true?

I think in Korea it's perfectly understandable. It's not right, but I definitely can see how it all went down.

It's an assumption on my part, but I'm guessing the kid wasn't that hurt. Regardless, kids here trust every ajeoshi. This needs to change. I'm sure at the time they were at the hospital, the kid had no reason to distrust the man.

Nobody questions an ajeoshi. This needs to change also. Only in Korea could circumstances unfold like this. I'm not surprised at all. We are in the land where everyone ignores everything around them only to focus on themselves. The kid was on his own obviously. This is extremely unfortunate, but a byproduct of this culture.

There's no safety taught here in any way. Kids have unlimited freedom. Nobody gives two hoots about anything outside of themselves. Is anybody really that shocked by this?

Ambulances are cheap, medical care here is cheap. I myself was involved in an accident this year. A boy ran in front of my motorcycle and I hit him. Luckily he's okay, and in the end he got off with a very strong lesson to look before you leap, but anyway, believe me, medical care here is very inexpensive.

As far as hospitals go, yes, they do close. Also, just because it is a hospital, it doesn't mean it can handle traumas. In my hometown we have seven or eight hospitals, but only 2 of them are trauma units (gunshots, car accidents, etc) so if you go to one of the other hospitals with a trauma, they will call an ambulance and have you taken to the trauma center as they are not equipped to handle it. The boy I hit, the first hospital we went to (in the ambulance) treated him and he stayed for one night before going to another hospital. The first one specialized in broken bones, but not neurology, so he went to a neurological specialist instead. It's probably the same thing here. The doctors saw the kid, he appeared fine (i.e., not bleeding everywhere, missing limbs, etc) and so they said go to the other hospital.

As far as the kid goes, think about it. You just got hit by a car. You're well enough to get up, walk around, etc, but still, you're probably in shock. The guy takes him to the hospital, the kids in shock, they say go to the other hospital, no one is going to ask questions and the kid isn't going to volunteer them. I can see it.

IMO, the medical care here is excellent. The emergency care... it could use some work. Of course, in my hometown, I live near the fire station so ambulances make it to my neighborhood in under a minute and they are staffed with well qualified people. Here, once you GET to the hospital, you're fine. The ambulance ride though... that's a scary time!

Well like I said, I do agree with you on the majority, you are right they SHOULD have called EMT. And both the man and boy should have waited for them to come. But I don't Koreans would have responded like that. Not that Korea I'm bashing Korea, it's just done differently.

yes, I too know that things are done differently here... and as many can attest to, I'm one of the first to say that Korea doesn't need to be like the west in every regard.

I've talked to many Koreans about the 'why' in this situation, and although that varied, we came to a general consensus about the 'should'.

Oh, and just off the presses, the driver in question only graduated from elementary school - driving was his only job.
