Maybe I am just being paranoid, as I don't trust people in general. But, who has actually trusted mailing off their CBC to the secretary of state's office in the USA to get their CBC apostilled? I am thinking of just bringing it to the US embassy when I get to Seoul. It took me a month to get the CBC, and I kind of don't trust the secretary of state to not hold it hostage. I live over 2 hours away from the office, or I could have already gone in person. I am also thinking of taking a chance and using my original degree because the notaries around here seem flaky. I emailed a notary person in my area, and she actually sent me back an email asking me how I knew she did this. DUH! She is on a list of notaries for my state. Again, a big DUH!

Local notaries are used to title transfers, power of attorneys, things like that. This could be something they've never seen before. So be patient and educate them. They've probably never heard of an apostille before either. The country clerks office may know of it.

But the apostille took less than a week to have mailed back in PA. It's the bureaucracy and they're set up to handle these requests. The ones I wouldn't trust are the third party ones on the internet who will do it for an added fee and could take weeks.

Just be sure to include a self-addressed stamped envelope if they're asking for one (although the fee may cover that) and write a short cover letter stating what country the apostille is for. And the correct payment of course.

Get your notarized copy of your diploma done while you're at it. Seriously, save yourself some grief.

Yes, I mailed mine off to the Sec. of State in Maryland. It was back in a miraculously short amount of time. It was something like 2 days. There were no problems with it whatsoever. 2 hours isn't that far if you are worried about it. Just make the trip yourself. Heck, I travel for almost that long on occasion just to get a damn burrito over here in Korea.

I just got mine apostilled today. I talked to the lady who did all the work and she said that she mails them out the same day that she receives them. Pretty cool because you can get it back the same week you send it in. It is on their priority list to do that and if it weren't for that, they don't even have much work to do.

If you're afraid of mailing it, I'd ask why? It's only a notarized copy of your CBC...it won't kill ya if it gets lost somewhere. Just send another one. But if you could, I'd suggest that you go in and do it yourself. Mine took less than a minute to apostille my diploma and CBC. Walked out of that place in two.
