...based on rather non-communicative textbooks. Any ideas? Anyone care to share some examples of things they've tried?

Well this proved a popular topic. Doesn't anyone else who helps write PS exam questions have some ideas to share.

There is some great ways to use PS exam questions based on a lot of technicalities such as spelling, punctuation, etc.

That's if you want to be evil.

Ocassionaly I like to throw in a major "I hate the teacher because he tested on a technacality rather than the actual content" type of questoins

A: Mike where have you been?
B: I _____1__________

Which is the wrong answer for 1

a) went to the supermarket with my dad.
b) I rode a bike to school.
c) ate with my friends.
d) discussed politics of the democratic party at the convention center.
e) fly a kite over the moon!

The answer is b by the way becausee he said I twice.

That's in the rare case I would do something liek that

I tend to focus more on the meaning of words and if the kids remembered the context.

For example,

A: I won the lottery!
B: Wow How _________1____________

What is a correct answer for 1
a) lucky am you
b) lucky is you
c) lucky it was you
d) lucky you are
e) lucky you is

We practiced the A + B dialogues so the students should have remembered the pharase somewhat.

The two questions I managed to get in my first grade middle schooler's test weren't communicative...

One question was a short conversation between two people, where one used the words lift and colour and the other elevator and color... They then had a series of multiple choice answers to guess their nationalities.

The second was a description of a scene of 5 people. They were then asked who the girl with the ponytail was. This was taken from something I found on Dave's actually.

Sorry not to be of more assistance.

I put questions like these on the last test. We studied mostly art and written instructions this quarter, so the questions from this semester's test weren't quite as conversational.

Choose the sentence that would be the worst advice for Jae Hyun to tell Young Pyo in the following situation.

Young Pyo: I want to be healthy.
Jae Hyun: _________________

1. You should eat many vegetables.
2. If you want to be healthy you should eat breakfast everyday.
3. If you want to be healthy you should not eat pizza everyday.
4. You should eat ice cream once a day.
5. You should exercise three or four times a week.

Fill in the missing line from the dialogue with the most appropriate sentence.

Seung Jin: Hello, could you tell me where the bathroom is?
Woon Jae: First, go to the next building. Then, its the first room on the left.
Seung Jin: _________________________________________
Woon Jae: First, go to the next building. Then its the first room on the left.
Seung Jin: OK, thank you. Goodbye.

1. I dont understand.
2. Where is the kitchen?
3. Thank you, goodbye.
4. Who is the bathroom?
5. Could you please repeat that?

Multiple-choice questions are the bane of communicative english but something we've got to live with in Korea for now. I count myself lucky that I'm not tied to the textbook but my students know my material will be included on the exam so they do pay attention in class & study my handouts. My co-teachers also give out points for active participation every class, which count toward the final grade. That helps too.

Heres the questions I put on the midterm exam this semester (3rd-year middle school girls):

1. Some people enjoy drinking strong black coffee, but most people think it tastes too ________, so they add cream and sugar. For the same reason, many prefer milk chocolate to dark chocolate. However, even though it also has a ________ flavor, beer is a popular drink when adult friends get together.

Which word correctly fills both blanks?
1. sour
2. sweet
3. bland
4. bitter
5. disgusting

2. Tom and Jessica (1) met for the first time at a friends birthday party. They started going on dates to movies and restaurants and after a short time they (2) fall in love. After meeting each others parents, Tom proposed to Jessica and they (3) got engaged. The wedding was held in a large church, and the next day they (4) went on a honeymoon to Bali. It was very romantic. They were very happy together and they decided (5) to start a family.

Which underlined expression is not correct?
(1) (2) (3) (4) (5)

3. Tom and Jessicas married life did not go well. After the baby was born, they argued often about many different things: how to raise their son, money problems, even each others hair styles. Sadly, they decided they couldnt live together anymore.

What did not happen next?
1. They got divorced.
2. They broke up.
3. They went on a honeymoon.
4. Their marriage ended.
5. Jessica became a single mom.

4. Its a busy street with many people doing different things. Two women are angry at each other and they are (1) ________. Two men are introducing themselves to each other and they are (2) ________. And a boy is telling a girl a secret. He is (3) ________.

Which combination of verbs fills in the blanks correctly?
1. (1) arguing (2) shaking hands (3) whispering
2. (1) shouting (2) shaking hands (3) yawning
3. (1) hugging (2) waving (3) holding hands
4. (1) fighting (2) holding hands (3) whispering
5. (1) fighting (2) shaking hands (3) shouting

5. I want to eat some foreign food for dinner tonight. I dont eat beef or pork or chicken, so fast food isnt a good idea. I like fish but only when its cooked, so no sashimi. I enjoy pasta but I ate spaghetti yesterday. I find Chinese food is a bit greasy. I like spicy food. Hmm, maybe a vegetarian curry. What kind of food should I eat?

Choose one:
1. Italian
2. Chinese
3. Korean
4. Indian
5. Japanese
