During my high school summer camp this year I tried to teach a series of jazz chants. Unfortunately they didn’t go down too well. My plan was to focus on a different area for each chant. In one I would look at the vocabulary, in another I would look at stress patterns. There was a definite lack of enthusiasm amongst the small group - perhaps because I was not entirely confident about using them, or perhaps there were just too many inhibitions floating around the room (both mine and my students). After two attempts, I decided to scrap the idea, and used other materials instead.

Undaunted by this experience, and having recently been given the freedom to teach what I want, I have decided to try again. I am attempting this with my grade 2 high school students – average 30 students per class. I would like to be a little more prepared this time, so am seeking your advice.

Do you have any experience using jazz chants? What methods worked well for you? And what totally bombed?

Thanks all Smile

It only works if you sync it up with Jazz hands and a top hat.

Seriously,
Kids dislike anything that isn't pop candy flavored.
Especilaly music.
Which makes the failure trying it, ever so more apparent.

I tried showing my kids a Sting video.
That blew over like a polar bear in a sauna.

High School student's interests are pretty bland.
Give them a mirror with some english words on it, they'll stare at it for hours.

So in sumation of my highly scientific and reasoned arguements,

Try to find some Big Bang songs.

Hmmm. 'Jazz Chants' is the title of a book series.

Edit: Hmmm. Apparently the OP was referring to musical Jazz Chants. My misinterpretation.

Has anybody used the book?

Jazz chants are just choral repetition(Audio Lingual approach) with clapping and a cool beat added. I would use it sparingly with Elemenatary to first grade middle school students
