And she sounded young, laughed a few times and overall seemed very friendly. I understand that Koreans laugh when they are nervous, so maybe I'm getting a false positive here.
Anyone else have a pleasent interview with their co-teacher and feel the same way? Did it work out well, or horrible?
My recruiter is going to forward me the contract. Its a public school, so I'm thinking everything will be pretty standard as far as vacation etc.
Also, I thought I was talking to the director of the school and so was surprised when no mention of salary was made. My recruiter was looking for a yes from me as well, and still no mention of money. I assumed I would be offerend a formal job, but it seems that I was just interviewed and told "we want to hire you".
I guess theres not much (any) room for negotions in GEPIK contracts? I was going to ask that they change the 15 day notice to 30 and also for air conditioning. Would be nice if they payed for the ticket as well, instead of reimbursing me though I don't intend asking for that: I don't want to seem overly picky. Any thoughts? |

My handler interviewed someone either yesterday or earlier today.. if she interviewed you, her laugh is just normal.. nothing from being nervous ;p
Odds of it being her are slim though ;D
A/C is something that's pretty normal to have.. you can always ask about it though. I personally don't know anyone who doesn't have A/C. Mine doesn't really cool and it's in my living room rather than my bedroom but it's still A/C.
Negotiations start when you ask. The school probably is hiring for a replacement so whatever they have is already standard and they probably won't just say it unless you ask about it. It doesn't hurt to ask if they can buy the plane ticket for you first. It'll be a yes or a no, or they'll inquire the office of education rep at their school and then get back to you. It's highly unlikely you'd ever get interviewed by the principal of a school as they probably don't speak any English. It's always the handler if anyone does interview you (at least majority). Salary would also not be mentioned b/c GEPIK has a standard set and it's shown in the contract. You can find the GEPIK contract yourself on the GEPIK website if you want. |

Thanks. Probably not your handler though, unless you work in ***-ri. I asked about AC, and the recuiter said it wasn't in the contract, but she would make sure they included it. I feel really good about my recruiter, hope she doesn't disappoint (so far its been excellent, and I'll be recommending her afer a month hopefully).
I didn't ask about the airfare being pre-paid: my impression was that few public schools do this, what with epic and gepic both having reimbursement in their contract. I'm also guessing that its too late to ask now, since that on top of the AC request might put me at a disadvantage when I tell them "no saturdays".
I noticed the pay scale, and was wondering how best to climb it in two years.
I have a BS in one of the sciences with no teaching experience and no TEFL/Celta certificate. I'm thinking that the best course of action would be to pick up a TEFL my first month or two there? That would bring me to the '2' pay level for 2.1.
How do I get to the 2+ though? Would I qualify a month in to my second contract, since that would be a year at the 2 level even if its split over two contracts?

Yea if your recruiter got you a phone interview with the school, that's already a lot better than most! Lucky you
You should still ask about the airfare if it's important to you.. you've got the advantage of being able to communicate with the school. Most of us get to pick the location and then we hop on a plane without ever talking to the school beforehand.. my school didn't know I was coming until the contract was signed and letter of appointment was received. My friend's school got changed while she was on the airplane lol. No Saturdays is in your contract, so if they want you to teach on Saturdays, you can just say no. Though area wide camps might be somewhat mandatory (1x a year in my area). It's overtime pay though if you do work them.

also use this to search the forums:

Much better searching method than using the search function on dave's.
I thought it was, you get the certificate, and then the next contract you sign (2nd year) you get the extra raise from having the certificate and the 100k raise for resigning. Posts on here tell me otherwise though, so your best bet is to do more searching. |
