Jeju City?
Hyeopjae Beach?
Seogwipo?
I'd like a clean, moderately-priced place somewhere on (or near, but preferably on) the beach. What's my best bet? What am I lookin' at as far as prices go? I'll be in Jeju from 07/03-07/06.
I'm also thinking of renting a 125cc scooter from Mr. Lee's bike shop in Jeju City. Anyone have any experience with scooters? It'll be my first time.
(Speaking of transportation, should I rent rent a car? I was thinking a scooter might be more fun, but it's also less convenient. Thoughts?)
Also, I'm hoping to visit Udo for a day; does anyone know if it's possible to take the scooter I've rented on the ferry going to Udo?
And, yeah, I know, this should go in the travel forum...but that spot gets so much less traffic than GD.
I appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks. |

Are accommodations on Udo plentiful? (Hotels, motels, whatever...)
Also, what sorts of hotel rates should I be expecting on the main island?
Thanks for the links. Some nice shots. I think I will check out Sunrise Peak (Seongsan). |

I'd recommend going to the circus or one of the submarines.
Perhaps if the weather is no good for the beach. |

I didn't go to Udo, even though it's visible in the background, in many of those photos.
Found this, on a web search:

12 NOON
Take ferry to Udo Island (10min) with bikes on board. 1000 won charge. Return ferry available every 1 hour. Up to you when to take the return ferry. |
on travel.meetup.com/715/calendar/10150387/
There are public busses from Jeju City that go right around Jeju Island. The main bus terminal at Jeju City is about a km inland from the port. Get a taxi or walk from Jeju City Harbour to the Jeju bus station terminal. I didn't figure this out until after I got back from Seogwipo. I stood by the side of the road at the Jeju port entrance for an hour, waiting for a local bus, & gave up, & flagged down a taxi to get to Sungsan instead.

Northeast of Seongsan-ri, 3.5km off the coast, is Udo Island (Cow Island), which has 1750 inhabitants yet still manages to be rural and relaxing despite throngs of tourists and tour buses, particularly at weekends. The highlights are the black-lava cliffs at Tolkani and the lighthouse that you can walk up to (15 minutes) for panoramic views of patchwork fields and brightly painted roofs. Koreas only coral-sand beach, Hongjodangoe Haebin, is brilliantly white. Take a picnic to the island as eating options are limited. A small community of haenyeo dives in the cove below the lighthouse.
To tour the islands cobweb of narrow roads you have a choice of wheels, but keep in mind that the island is 17km in circumference: the tough way is by bicycle (two hours rental W5000), the soft way is on the hop-on hop-off tourist buses (W5000, every 30 minutes), and the fun way is on a scooter (per hour W15, 000) or quad bike (per hour W20, 000).

Getting there & away
Car ferries (W4500 return, 10 minutes, at least hourly) cross to Udo island from Seongsan port. The ticket office (782 5671) is at the far end of the port, a 15-minute walk or a short taxi ride from Seongsan-ri. The last ferry leaves Udo at 6pm. |

Now the question is, MOTORCYCLE or CAR?
Can anyone with experience chime in? Obviously the car is more convenient...but the motorcycle just sounds so freakin' fun.
Thoughts?
Will I need to make a rental car reservation in advance if I decide to go that route? |

My suggestion: rent a car (unless you really like motorcycles and have experience with them, because the inland roads can be rather uphill). Also, hopefully it doesn't rain when your here, but in the off chance it does...
With a car, you can plunk your stuff in it, grab a map at the airport or any tourist info, and drive around the island until you see a nice beach that you like. Then, keep an eye out for 민박 or 벤션 or guest houses. There are quite a few of them if you take a good look, and prices usually range from around 25,000 or so a night and up for an ondol room. You can check out the room before you rent it too. Would you be ok with a minbak? There are actual quality hotels, especially in Jungmun, that are close to the beach, but the prices of course are higher.
You can always call tourist info (064)1330 and they might be able to help you book a place before you get here if you'd rather. But then you'd be missing out on deciding for yourself what the perfect beach is.
Also, camping is an option if you were interested. But would you want to lug a tent around?
I know you can take your car on the ferry to Udo. I would assume you could take a motorcycle or scooter, but I don't know as I haven't done it. They do have scooter and bike rentals on the Udo itself, though.
Tourist into (064)1330 could also help you out with inquiries about Udo, like places to stay and whatnot.
Hope you have a good time on Jeju! |

I'm also researching Jeju as I'm tempted to go in a couple of weeks. I am from the UK and just have your average driving license...is it sufficient for hiring a car in Korea? I rented one in Canada last year without any problems, but obviously it's usually a whole new ball game over here...
Thanks! |

I heard the submarines were a rip-off, but I could be wrong.
Also, highdial: You might need an international driver's permit and (of course) a passport to rent a car on Jeju.
You can check out this website for more information: http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/TR/TR_EN_5_3_1.jsp
