I signed my original contract for 6/1, but couldn't arrive until 6/13...

The head teacher is saying we will destroy the old one and sign a new one AFTER I get my health certificate...I haven't worked yet bc I'm still on a week quarantine.

Anyone hear of anything like this?

I fear she's trying to see if I test positive, and I shouldn't bc I haven't done any narcotics, but with the possibility of a false positive from something, I'm a little nervous.

She said, "If there is a problem with your health, then we have no contract."

However, the contract clearly states that you have 90 days to get your health cert/ARC...

Any thoughts?[/u]

I suppose it's ok to change the date on the contract. The starting date should be your date of arrival at your school.

However, make sure your contract starts on 6/13/09 and ends on 6/12/10.

I've seen many people get screwed on severence because they'd only change the start date and not the end date from 6/13/09 to 5/29/10 which is not a year.

if you havent done any drugs or anything, and know ur healthy, you should be fine. they are just a little worried about catching any of your american illnesses, if you have any at all.

and i suggest getting your health check asap, because at least in my case, my coteacher has told me i cant sign up for internet, tv, cell phone until i have my arc card

Something very similar happened to me just yesterday. I was told (according to the contract I received from GEPIK and my POS recruiter) that my first day of work would be June 1st, and I arrived in Korea a couple days before that. The day after I got here, my recruiter tells me that the (sole) English teacher at my school would be busy until June 18th. Strange, but I didn't have any problem with not working during that time. Well, the 18th just rolled around, and the school wanted me to sign a new contract (exactly the same) and briefly mentioned and dismissed the idea of changing the start date. A couple hours later, my recruiter calls me to tell me that I should let them change the start date. I politely said, "No." It's not my problem that the school didn't want to use me, but I was told to get here by the first of the month, I was here, and I've been incurring expenses since that time. The school seems okay with it... maybe I'm just lucky.

You weren't in Korea when you were supposed to be, so maybe you should be open to changing the start date to the date of your arrival... but under no circumstances should you let them change it to the day after you get your medical check. Those are the kinda games hagwons play... don't put up with that at public schools.

Awww, that's so cute. The things these folks say sometimes just cracks me up. In order to get your visa to enter the country, you must have a contract. And yes, according to these contracts you have 90 days to get your medical check. If you wanna wait to get it done, then wait. Tell them, as nicely as you can, to have some patience. Play the foreigner card a little if you want and tell them that your doctors have always told you not to get medical exams when your too tired... or any other BS you can think up.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah they want to change the date to my arrival date, so that'll be fine. I've already taken the health screening, so if I need to re-take it, it may be a problem...We'll see...

I'm getting my medical check and ARC on my time (my idea; my co-teacher wanted to take me but I told him I didn't want to waste his time), so no, I haven't gotten it yet. Today, the 19th, (my second day of actually going to the school for the purpose of working), I received my first full month's pay, including the base salary, housing allowance, and the 300k settlement allowance.

Sorry, but I can't PM this: (not enough Dave's posts) Don't you need your ARC to open a Korean bank account? How did they pay you then?

Not everyone gets paid their salary into their bank accounts. Every month, I am handed an envelope stacked with green bills!

This is my third year here, so I've still got my bank accounts from my first year open.

On a side note, I'm pretty sure I didn't have my ARC before I got my bank account my first year, but I could be horribly mistaken.
