I haven't been able to get a straight answer on this, and I have found a lot of conflcting info on the boards so far. Do Canadians really need the VSS on top of their local CRC? Has anyone got the E-2 Visa approved without the VSS recently?

I got my CRC done with no problem, but no VSS because the station said I would need a letter from the requesting employer to do it and the school I was origianlly going for said I didn't need it. Due to circumstances I'll be trying for another position.

Anyways, I checked the Toronto Korean Consulate site and it says nothing about the VSS.
http://www.koreanconsulate.on.ca/en/?mnu=a02b04

Does anyone know for sure? Or have any recent experience with this?

Thanks!

but I didnt need any letter, the cops at the station just said "fill this area out to the best of your ability"....

so I just filled in my school name, said i'd be teaching etc etc

done in less than 10 days

I had this exact problem. For some reason Toronto Police won't do a vulnerable sector search for individuals. You used to be able to get it through the Korean Consulate (they'd be the organization, instead of say Big Brother or whatever). But they no longer require a VSS to get the visa, all they need now is a regular background check. So the Korean Consulate in Toronto doesn't do it anymore.

There is no way that you can get a VSS. Trust me, I tried. Eventually after going through tons of crap the Toronto Police told me there was no way I could get it. I told my recruiter this and he said a regular CBC would be fine.

But I don't have a visa yet and my recruiter is being a douche.

But the Korean Consulate said they no longer require the VSS to get a visa, just a background check.

You shouldn't need a VSS. They require a letter from your employer before they will do it. Also takes around 2 weeks. CBC is typically done while you wait. I doubt any job in Korea needs a VSS, they want CBCs though.

I needed VSS and the woman at the Toronto consulate who notarized my CRC specifically checked for it. This was in January. My local police station just made me fill out a second form, no work address required.

i didn't need it at all

i only once needed to submit a CRC and ordered from canada two ways: (a) the fast way by having a family member take a signed letter from me into a local rcmp station authorizing them to pick up an issued-within-a-day crc; and also independent of that I did (b) the slow way of sending to ottawa an application form with fingerprints having been taken at a local cop shop in korea and waiting for over a month for the ottawa rcmp to process the crc with vss

well, the (a) came back to me in korea quickly so i submitted it, thinking if it doesn't work then (b) is in the works and i could submit it a month later if needed

the korean immi office in sacheon, a relatively small rural place in gyeongsangnam province, accepted the barebones quick (a) option WITHOUT VSS, no questions asked

since then i have changed jobs, having my alien card transferred to the tongyeong immi office, and no crc was requested at all with my newest e-2 visa, despite spending three months back in canada last summer due to a funeral in the family

the fact is: immigraton rules are inconsistently applied in korea, and the VSS is not required of everybody, it's hit or miss (and i suspect the smaller rural immi offices just perhaps more laid back)

HolyCow, thanks, its good to hear from someone who ran into the same problem I did. When did the Toronto consulate tell you they didn't need the VSS anymore?

Overall I am getting the impression its still a bit of a hit or miss situation. I guess I'll just submit the CRC I have now for comfirmation from the consulate... afterall, there website doesn't mention the VSS. I know its been updated recently too (as in the last 2-3 days) as they upped the fees for document certification.

I'll post here however things go. Maybe save someone else the same headache.

This, and the fact Canadian laws (with regard to disclosure of criminal records) are inconsistently applied, creates a nightmare scenario where one is never sure one stands until one tries.

maybe it has changed but before i came here in february i needed to get a VSS.

i got one, actually two, from the headquarters in mississauga (peel region). if you don't live in peel region then i am not sure of the rules. but if you do, you need to look for the form that has "vulnerable sector search" in the header.

but, maybe it has changed since then, not too sure.

I went to the main police station on college right downtown. I think you have to go to whichever station is the closest.

When I lived in Guelph I had no trouble getting a VSS. Maybe it's just that one police station, which is pretty stupid.

winnipeg police services. check the box on the application and get the vss. any canadian can get a crc from them. download the application, fill it out, check the box for VSS, photocopy two pieces of ID, mail or fax it to them and youre done. one week to process and you gett CRC with VSS 100% hassle free. why ask if you really need it when you can get it easily at no extra cost. better to have extra than not enough.

i can attest to what oculis posted above.

was jumping through hoops with ottawa to get my record check sent overseas and applying for it via fax, etc...

winnipeg police website got me squared away in no time...

the inconsistencies between municipalities as far as this kind of stuff is concerned is ridiculous.
