Yeah I've heard about this before. I think the key was that you have to do it on an empty stomach (at least 3 hours after your last meal). I've done something approximating this for my last 2 workouts now - first the stepper for 15 mins at 1:30 at medium pace then 30 seconds high, and then the same time and intervals on the bike or cross trainer. I would like to do this on the treadmill sometimes but it's a hassle to keep changing the speed all the time. I guess I have to read a bit more to find out how I can optimise this. I'm certainly puffed by the end.
Back to my original question. Does anyone have an opinion on replacing lunges and squats with the stepper?
Cheers |

Update: Since June 1st 2009, I've walked everyday for at least 30 minutes.
For the last few years, I used to walk four times a week for 30 minutes.
To keep up with the new routine, I eat an extra meal, so now I have 4 meals a day instead of 3.
The final meal is in the evening, 4 slices of toast, on which I apply very small amounts of butter, a cup of tea and a few grapes.
I am approaching a third full week of my new exercise routine, I hope to make this routine permanent.
My boxer shorts feel more loose than before around the waist. I think this new fitness regime is working. My abdomen looks a bit more toned than before, but I doubt I'll have the inward-loooking stomach. |

You can't really replace squats with anything. The closest thing is the deadlift. There is simply no other exercise, and certainly no machine, that produces the level of central nervous system activity, improved balance and coordination, skeletal loading and bone density enhancement, muscular stimulation and growth, connective tissue stress and strength, psychological demand and toughness, and overall systemic conditioning than the correctly performed full squat.
Squat is king!
Deadlift the prince!
I guess it depends on your goals and what your looking to do. I am looking for strength as I am not genetically inclined to look all nice and sexy on the beach.
HIIT is hot right now and proven to work for people. Check out Tabata training, I have read many good things about it and it's short. I am thinking about trying this when my wife and I come back from our resigning trip home. I have lost about 35 lbs(15 or so H2O weight) since coming to Korea 9 months ago. Still got more lbs to shed so I can be more healthy and not die of a heart attack when I'm 45. Been working out for about 5 months and feel good about the gains I have made. I am a big guy and an ex-basketball player that allowed himself to get in a real bad way back in the US. One of the great perks of Korea is I have found this part of my life again. |

4 slices of toast is way too much (carb overload). Instead of calling it a 4th meal just look at it as a snack. Try switching to just 2 slices of toast and use margarine (vegetable or olive oil spread) instead of fattening butter.
And I wouldn't really call it a fitness regime. Walking is a normal everyday activity that people do. If you want the inward looking stomach you need to do cardio and build muscle (burns fat). You can have it, you just have to put in the work.
Having an inward stomach would be nice but I'm more concerned with getting big. It's hard to gain weight and maintain a flat stomach at the same time... But if I stand up straight my belly doesn't stick out, so it's all good. |

I think walking briskly 7 days a week, for at least 30 minutes is a fitness regime. Look at how obese the world is, it seems most people do nothing at all.
My stomach looks leaner. It was never massive, but it is looking better with my new fitness regime. |

Yes, walking can be a ftiness regime. It's not gonna build strength or indurance but with a better diet it will make you feel better and possibly lose weight.
30 minutes is ok but try an hour. After about an hour of continuos brisk walking your body will release some different hormones that benefit you in different ways.
Obesity is not always tied to no exercise or diet. Stress and poor food choices are a huge factor. Eating quality calories(at the right time) while doing moderate exercise will do wonders. Stress is a big factor also. The less stressd the more your body is loose and accepting of outside things like food and exercise. |

Short intense VS long cardio workouts
I do some pretty intense MTB rides, ranging from 60 mins to 90 mins with sometimes a 60 min road ride thrown in.
I don't have the space here to go on the epic rides like I used to back home, so I've suffered physically here a bit, but it might be due to poor eating habits (damn that pizza joint downstairs). I used to compete in 12 and 24 hour enduros at a high level, but not any more.
I've read some stuff about how long workouts are good for fat burning, while others say short and high intensity is better for fat burning as it raises your fitness level and hence your metabolism so you burn more fat after the ride.
Any experts out there care to comment? |

| Look in the mirror. Not at the scale. Look at your body. If you are skinny, then go for the six pack to impress. If you are fat, then go for the big chest, arms and legs to imress. you can't take a skinny guy and make him big for the summer and you can't take a fat guy and make him ripped by summer. you have to look at your body and choose which route to take. Go big, or go ripped. |

Thanks for the general info warmachinenkorea, but I think that the genetic inclination would actually be to have bigger hips/thighs, as this would probably represent the ability to reproduce more sucessfully (apparently I have "childbearing hips"). The inclination to look nice on the beach is much more a learned behaviour. This is backed up by the number of derisive comments aimed at overweight women in many threads on this forum (not this one so far, thank god). Threads about overweight men seldom get such a response. It's a shame that all threads can't be as supportive as this one for helping people to lead a healthy life and not judge them because they struggle with their weight. |

| I agree that being comfortable on the beach or any place that people show more skin has to be learned. My wife will not show skin (partially because of our beliefs) but because she has never learned to be comfortable with her body. I am the same. Some people work out just for vanity shake, and if that's what they wanna do let'em. I just like the idea of actually being strong over looking strong. |

Update:
I've been working out despite doctor's orders and this week I get to move up in bench press and shoulder press 'cuz I hit my 5X5 goal last week. Hell yeah!!!
Bench: 58kg 5X5
Shoulder Press: 35kg 5X5
No squats or deadlifts though. Think I will slowly start incorporating deadlifts back into the workout, and hopefully squats in the near future. |

I have stuck to my new exercise regime. I am looking a bit more toned than before. I want to get a treadmill, anybody bought one here?
A friend of mine said they are around 500,000 won from Dongdaemun.
I am going to get one, soon. |

im coming to Nowon (annam-dong specifically) Seoul in 3 weeks and am looking to lose about 40-45 lbs.
I really want to use competitive sports or martial arts to help me reach this goal. I'd like to become skilled eventually at whatever I pick up.
Does anyone have suggestions for good gyms or sports clubs? Im looking for decent prices, friendly and patient to beginners.
Also- I'm a woman, but I dont want any pansy girly stuff. I want to work my body hard and get fit. |

I've bought a treadmill, second-hand. It's about 6 months old and in excellent condition.
Total cost 340,000 won, including 70,000 won for transportation from Bundang to Pyeongtaek. It will arrive at 5pm.
Now, I can exercise in the privacy of my own home. I love my own company.
I have made major changes to my diet and I am looking much slimmer than before.
I regularly ask a friend to rate my stomach shape i.e. 10 is elephant size and 0 is total perfection.
A few weeks ago I was a 6, the week before last 3.8, and last week a 3.6.
Do I realistically expect further improvement? Yes. Why?
I have reduced my intake of cakes, biscuits, cookies by 100%.
I have cut my margarine intake by 100%. I have cut milk out by 100% too.
What do I eat/drink now?
I still eat 3 meals a day, but now a typical day looks like this:
Breakfast: 2 bananas and a glass of water. 3 times a week I have a slice of processed cheese for calcium.
Lunch: A tin of tuna, salad (cucumber/tomatoes), grapes and a glass of water.
Dinner: One fairly big piece of tandoori chicken, with salad, grapes, 1 banana and a glass of water.
If I feel hungry in the evening, which is rare, I eat fruit and drink water.
Before June, I used to eat at least 12 slices of bread with margarine everyday, I used to eat 4 cookies everyday, frosties cereal with semi-skimmed milk 3 times a week, I used to eat rice 6 times a week. I also used to walk for 30 minutes just 4 times a week.
Now, I have eliminated rice and bread which makes me look bloated. I have eliminated milk, frosties, cookies, chocolate etc.
I have also eliminated fruit juice and tea with sugar/milk from my diet.
I feel fine, and I am seeing a nice reduction in my stomach shape. Since June, I have increased my exercise by 37% each week. I walk everyday now for at least 30 mins.
I realistically hope for further improvements. Because I intend to exercise on the treadmill for 60 mins everyday.
Was all of this difficult? Yes. But I am really determined to see this through until I have a slim figure. I am pleased to say I'm getting there. |

I like it. |
