I've heard this exact story before. Can't seem to find it now, but talked about it at least a year ago.

Hey, you forgot us Californians. Did you know that our biggest cash crop is mj? Pretty impressive.

I love pot. It loves me. It's always there for me (because I have a prescription for medical herb and live about 2 blocks from a pot store).

As much as I love the stuff, I would never go near it in Korea. It's insane how they can just drag you in and drug test you. That is a worry I can do without as I am too paranoid as it is. I think westerners who smoke reefer in Korea are just basically taking a big dump on Korean soil with their flagrant violation of Korean law. Kind of like how Korean massage parlors in Los Angeles are doing the same thing by flagrantly violating prostitution laws, but I digress.

how foolish of me.... is is the home of Berkley and other well-known pro-pot places! Wink

Not that the midwest is without sin.... I hail from suburban Detroit.... the home of the hash bash every first week of April in ann arbor.... and my own high school was home to the marijuana kingpin of the 'burbs.... who claimed he grew his own because he was too scared to go to Detroit to score some weed..... Sad

granted, his entire basement was converted into a hydroponics bay and about 100 plants..... but still...... he DID have to go to Detroit otherwise.... a fate worst than death!!!! Wink

Yes, but laws against marijuana are taking a big dump on human liberties. Being busted for marijuana is like martyrdom! I wouldn't use it in Korea (again) though.

True that. Definitely not worth being hauled over the coals by a police ajosshi. How could you have an enjoyable smoke when you're looking over your shoulder for the kyeongchal execution squads? It's not like there's even many secluded parks or whatever where you could spark up in peace. Amsterdam, Laos, Thailand, BC, California... not Korea.

Funny thing is the laws are much stricter in other Asian countries than Korea. I read about how Taiwan, Thailand, and Indonesia have severe death penalty and imprisonment laws, but yet it's easy to get high in those places.

I wouldn't feel comfortable smoking out in any Asian country; only Western Europe and North America. Asia is not the drug tourists place it was long thought to be just becuase they used to do it and still do in some areas. I bet you can find in any Asian country, but if someone knows and wants a bob, then they'll nark you out. While I wouldn't do it, I got a laugh out of this video of these rappers zooting it up in an Incheon airport smoking room.

The Korea Herald continues to explain "The suspects are believed to have routinely used the drug from a young age," a police official said. "We have to tighten visa controls for foreign teachers with medical and criminal records." EFL teachers are expected to undergo an in depth medical exam (2008); however, the marijuana tests were removed from the test shortly after.

As far as pot being illegal in Korea, you can thank the USA for that. People all over Asia used it for thousands of years until an ambitious drug czar named Harry Anslinger decided to build his career by demonizing what most of us agree is a pretty innocuous substance. The movie Grass (which you find on google video) goes into all of that and how we (the USA) bribed, browbeat, threatened, etc other countries to enact laws against it lest they not be the beneficiaries of American benevolence Confused Soju is a thousand times worse. I personally believe the toxic nature of soju is why there is so much tension in Korea. What is the common denominator of all repugnant ajoshis?????

All that said, it's their country and to not abide by their laws (as ridiculous as they may seem to us) is totally irresponsible and disrespectful. Unfortunately there are many Koreans who resent our presence and are just looking for any opportunity to make us look bad. STOP GIVING THEM SO MUCH AMMO!

Yesterday I walked into an 'herb' store in Venice, CA, which is open to everyone off the street and also happens to sell the highest quality marijuana out of glass jars (you have to have a medical "recommendation" to get the buds but there is a doctor on site). It is one of 4 cannabis stores within 2 blocks of each other, all of which have ajoining art/photo galleries.

Now today, Mexico is announcing it is de-criminalizing ALL drugs...

When the Berlin wall of prohibition falls, is Asia (Korea) going to join the party?

I swear the herald reprints this story at least a few times a year, it seems so familar, the nationality of the teachers and dealers, the quote from the cop, them being busted in class (doubtless to conjure up images of a red eyed hippy being dragged away in front of a load of frightened Korean children) it's always the same....don't hold your breath if you want to discover the teachers fates or anyone who can confirm they exist.
