Just a question--one of many I could ask--about my hagwon employer's practices:
When I came to Korea in November, I was interested in the 'free' housing offered. Well, I live in an officetel, and every month I pay about W137,000 for something or other related to management expenses, because I guess gas and other things are included. Yet, I don't know anyone else who pays anything for where they live. This is a subgreat officetel, anyway.
I hope it's usual and customary, as they say, because otherwise the labor board here in Ilsan isn't too friendly toward foreigner complaints--unfortunately, I already know that firsthand.
Thanks for the help. |

If it includes gas (i.e. heating) it's not a bad deal and it's not unusual for teachers living in apartment blocks to pay monthly maintenance fees. However, if it didn't include gas it would be a very high monthly fee. |

My management fee is 80,000, but comes with the bill that includes power and water and so the total works at at around 150,000 (in fact the last four bills have been within 5000 won of 150,000) |

This is typical, and the biggest reason that officitels and apartments suck, especially for incoming new teachers on low salaries. You could rent out a one or two bedroom place in a multi-story, smaller building or house and not pay any management fees, but, no, they put you in a place that sucks more money out of your pocket for less space.
Why? Officitels are the easiest things to rent, and if you leave, they're ease to get out of. People are coming and going regularly. If you were in a small building or house, they'd have to pay and wait until they got someone to rent the place out, and that can take time.
Smile and say, 'Just payin my dues.' Hopefully, you'll be able to choose your own place next time around and accept a housing fee in lieu of the 'free apartment'. |
