So, when I show up sometime in August, I plan on bringing some DVD's with me. You know, just some must haves to keep me from rotting my brain too much with Korean Television.

So far these are on the definite list:

The Big Lebowski
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Army of Darkness

Any other suggestions?

Also, what kind of US cable stations can you pick up in Korea?

As you can probably tell from my username, I am a big movie fan. As a movie fan, your question is a bit stupid. Just bring what you like. Who knows what movies you have in your collection, or what movies you like!

I must say though, from the three movies you listed, you must have impeccable taste in movies. All three of them should be in everyone's collection.

To address you last question, you won't get any US cable stations in Korea really, except for the Discovery Channel, but it is not exactly the same as the US version. There are a number of movie channels on Korean cable that play a mix of western and asian movies. Sometimes they play good movies, and other times, but they play some terrible movies over and over and over....

I'd say grab some box sets:

Curb Your Enthusiasm
The Sopranos
Arrested Development

etc

seconded, I have over 800 movies in avi, 100 movies in 720p and 700gb of tv.

I am currently downloading a movie at around 11MB/s

plus they show western tv and movies on some channels here (normally the same ones again and again and again)

if you bring 10 movies thats 10 days out of 365 days in a year, why bother?

Honestly, I don't download a lot of movies. I download TV series but no movies.

Dunno why, just always been that way.

BS.Dos. I definitely agree with the Sopranos, honestly couldn't get into CYE or Arrested Dev. Oz and the Wire, however, I dug a lot.

Granted, I'll prolly just buy used online, but yeah. The three I mentioned are definites.

I'll prolly have to grab SLC Punk, Blow, Godfather (the first one), Scarface, Goodfellas, and Spinal Tap at some point in time too....

That's gonna be a bitch to archive, if that's what you're planning on doing. I have about 3 terabytes of data I'm currently transferring onto DVDs, all the while downloading more stuff everyday : / mostly 720p blu-ray rips (which I own, of course Wink )

I also love movies but I also love TV series. I'd bring your favorite TV series with you, too.

I would say bring a few movies to get you through the first few weeks, when you may not have cable or internet yet. Definitely do not pack them in their cases, just put them in a CD holder...TV shows are the best to bring, hours of entertainment. I would not bring too many movies...unless you always want to watch them on your laptop. Korea is a different region and you can't play on a Korean DVD player. I live in a smaller city and have bought and rented tons of American movies since getting here. Just look for places that say DVD on the outside...its about 1.25 or so to rent for two days, and you don't need a membership or anything(just works on the trust system I think)

If I were you I'd bring the movie - SHORTBUS

When you get here ask your hakwan director to watch it in private with you, explaining -

'This movie will explain a lot to you about me.'

Honestly, we're talking about stuff you'll rarely find on the torrent sites, or else things that would have to be ordered from Amazon.

my picks:

Get On The Bus
In The Company Of Men
Withnail & I
Heartbreak Ridge
King Of New York
