I have to do a summer camp soon and they want me to prepare some songs to teach the 6th grade students. They will have to perform the song by singing and dance the so I would like to pick something that they will be able to get excited about. Still, I want to be able to teach them something about English (i.e. grammer, cultural tips, etc.) I have some ideas for activites (like fill in the missing word or put the song phrases in order) but I am having trouble picking some good songs. I was thinking maybe Grease's Summer Nights because its a good dance song and there are a lot of past tense verbs I can discuss with them. I also thought about High School musical though I'm not sure of anything specific I could teach with it. Does anyone have suggestions? I could really use some advice.

korean 6th graders?? boy bands definitely. since they love boy and girl groups (TVXQ, Super Junior, Wonder Girls, SNSD, Big Bang...) give them a taste of our earlier boy bands when they were popular! or girl bands haha.

nsync, backstreet boys, 98 degrees, britney spears? thats what im thinking... american culture right?? hehe.

Thanks for the suggestions. LOL! I like the lemon tree song. I don't know why but I just found it funny the first time I listened to it. I think it would make a good filler song just because its not much of dance song. ( I have to teach them 3 songs but they will perform one of them.) I was also thinking some of the boy or girl bands might be good because I think it sounds more similar to the Korean pop but I'm not sure if there are any that are simple enough for them to memorize. I'll look into it. Are there particular songs from these groups that you think could be appropriate MissLady717?

hm... youre right... they might be hard to memorize for them... but if you want to try haha i say try these:

98 degrees- My Everything (Super Junior likes to cover it)

Nsync- Bye bye bye (they like those band dances dont they?? lol)

Christina Aguilera- Genie in a Bottle (I know its risque for 6th graders, but SNSD has a song called Genie coming out that has a lot of the same lines in korean for reference)

BoA had her english album out too. they might like those.

Aladdin- A Whole New World. Man they love that song lol

i also hear they love usher and alicia keys if that helps any.

if all fails... make them sing and dance to YMCA for your own entertainment haha.

My kids loved "The Elephant Song" by Eric Herman, and after I bought all his cd's, "Bounce and Flap and Twist" is a MUCH bigger hit. They don't sing much, but they have a great time jumping up and down. I use it as a reward after they have finished other tasks. It gets the kids all wound up...and then I say "THANK YOU EVERYONE, HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!" and then I leave.
Which is kind of evil, I know!

High School Musical Remix not only has karaoke sing-a-longs, but also some dance lessons for a few of the songs (subtitled in both English and Korean).

High School Musical 2's bonus disk has the karaoke plus "Rehearsal Cam" which shows the director setting up the choreography and stuff for a song and then bounces to the song in the movie. I usually let my students see the rehearsal cam with Korean subtitles so they understand the meaning of the song and then show the song scene from the movie with English karaoke subtitles.

There are ready-made quizzes and games for all three High School Musical films all over the Internet.

High School Musical 3 features full-scale, Broadway style productions and is more suited for older high school kids. HSM1 is fine for older elementary and up, while HSM2 has more of a classic beach-party feel to it - ala the old Disney teen films with Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon.

It was worth it for me to buy all three in the series.
