And right, too! Maybe there is a god.
US to drop satellite spying on Americans
Tue, 23 Jun 2009 15:32:11 GMT
The Obama Administration intends to put an end to a Bush-era program that authorizes the use of US spy satellites for domestic security purposes.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano plans to abandon the controversial project, which was developed when the former President George Bush was in office to give law enforcement an extra tool to fight "terrorism", said a government official on Monday.
"It's being shut down," said a homeland security official.
Initiated in 2007, the program, which is called the National Applications Office, was lambasted by advocates of civil liberty and privacy as they said it would lead to domestic spying.
While the Democrats have welcomed the closing of the program, some Republicans remain skeptical, urging the project to be maintained.
"If it is true, it's a very big mistake," said Peter King, who is the top Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee. "This is definitely a step back in the war on terror."
In the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks US statesmen began putting together laws to further surveillance programs aimed at the American people. The move drew great criticism on the part of civil liberty and privacy supporters.
According to Privacy International, in 2007 the United States had a privacy index score of 1.5 (out of five possible points), which makes the US tied for forty-first with Taiwan and Thailand out of forty seven countries. |

Spy Satellites take pictures from orbit.
What is the different between spy Satellites and Google Earth taking photos?
If US spy Satellites can't even track the movement of Osama Bin Laden or even give any reliable information on North Korea, then I'm not worried that "big brother" will be able to track my every move. |

If they wanted you or me, they would find us anywhere in the world in 24-48 hours. Don't you find it just a little bit odd they haven't been able to find Osama?
What I also find odd is that Interpol put out a worldwide alert for CPN but they never did it for OBL! WTF is going on here? |

True. I'd be much more upset about them being able to hack into my email at any time without needing a warrant if I were an American. Quite frankly what's the big difference between some satellite following you around or some agent? |

Yes it makes you wonder. OBL was the neocons' dream come true, however. |

Because they know that OBL is either in Pakistan or Afghanistan in areas where their writ doesn't run.
He's not traveling around the world going from place to place. Besides most everyone who watchs the news knows what he looks like anyway. |

You sound like you know where he is. Can I help you find him and split the $25 mil?

In Saudi Arabia DOES make the most sense. Which would explain why Bush seemed to have little interest in the Pakistan/Afghanistan region.
Bush and his strong ties to Saudi Arabia, and Saudi Arabia with it's very strong closed doors policies. It's about the only place that truly makes sense for Obama Bin Ladin. |

Seeing as how the Saudi government revoked OBL's passport and stripped him of citizenship...I very much doubt that. They're still annoyed with him for speaking out against them. |

That doesn't mean there aren't many places there to hide or connections to help shelter him. |
