Just got a job through GEPIK in Ansan City. Anybody ever been there? Worked there? Gone through GEPIK?

Hey thanks, I'd be very interested in hearing some more about Ansan and Gepik if you have time, tried to PM you and it said I cant because I haven't posted 25 topics or something. Email me at [email protected]

I accepted a position in Ansan City through GEPIK too. Starting in Sept at Hwarang Elementary School.

I don't think I will be replacing you though Rory because I spoke to the co-teacher and the native English teacher who I'll be replacing. But I've read your troubles here on ESL Cafe and sympathize with you. Confused

Well merrypr4nkster, I'll probably run into you in Ansan City then. You should email or talk to the GEPIK representative for Ansan, her name is Emma. She was helpful in giving me information about the area of Ansan I will be living or working in.

thank you! I will say that my problem seems to be the exception and not the norm in the area.... I always tell the others to consider themselves lucky....

I just keep playing the Pearl Jam song "Alive" in my head, and thanking my stars my first coteacher's wish to get me fired never came true, thanks in part to the school shrinking by 2/3.... she got the hook instead... Wink

So I still get my bonus, and found a decent gig FAAAAR from Ansan in a nice sleepy but happenin' place.... and I get to go to Jeju with my GF from my old school and play out "China Girl" by Bowie on the beach..... I'm happy..... Wink

I'm not replacing you either Rory. I just got an email today that the last teacher had a, and I quote, "mental handycap breakdown because she was black and couldn't handle or make friends in Korea". This seemed kind of odd and racist to me... Any thoughts?

oh, yes.... if it is who I am thinking of, I'd have to side with the school on this one.... I emailed you off the yahoo ansan list- I will try one more time....

long story short if it is who I think it is..... seeing a handome American guy at the PCROOM is not an invitation to dump your emo. baggage of the school on him and get him to do your powerpoint presentations!

I'll email to see if you want to know more.... Wink

LOL!

I wonder if they would mention her race if she was a white woman?

Oh well!

That's one of the things I think GEPIK and I assume EPIK and SMOE could do better- set up SOME kind of regular mtg. for teachers with their comrades to meet on a regular basis.... not weekly, or even monthly- it just seems too easy to get lost if you're not SUPER-outgoing or need the admiration of others so much you become a GEPIK rep.....

I mean, one was so needy she smacked me on the back at immigration just so I acknowledged her existence..... of course, being the suave man of mystery I am- I just looked past her... Hasta La Vista, Muchacha... Cool

Ya, Rory please email me with some details about what happened! I found it odd that they mentioned her race in the email. I've read in some places in Korea people can be racist or prejudice towards others, what do those who've been to, or are in, Korea think? Is this true?

Done and done! I didnt hear back form the other email I sent, so if you get it, let me know! I admit to having my beefs with GEPIK re: a snooty coteacher from Hell, but by and large, the people here are happy.

Awwww merrypr4nkster, that sucks about your situation.

Well if it helps, my recruiter can help you find another teaching position and I can recommend you to him. The last time I contacted him, he told me that there were a few positions in Ansan that were available. Also my recruiter is currently in the US until the 29th going back to Korea, he is willing to meet up, that's if you live in California. Basically if you have your documents, you can turn it into him in person to speedy up the process.

I'll email if you want more information. Hope that helps. Smile

Don't give up. Smile
