I bought an Iriver e-book reader for a little less than a hundred. fits in the palm of my hand.
found some software to convert PDF's to .TXT.
I have a thousand books on it now.
it has a backlight so I can read in the dark and it holds mp3's and pictures and it's a voice recorder and gets FM radio.
can also play movies but I won't bother because it is so small.
I have read over 300 books on it now |

| Doesn't it strain your eyes? Looks pretty small to be considered as a Ebook reader |

no actually
the font sizes are adjustable and I've never felt any strain or discomfort using it. |

The Samsung Papyrus was supposed to be out in June. It's late. I suspect the touch screen will not be very useful anyway... The Sony PRS-700's touchscreen cannot be used to take notes (it's not Wacom therefore not very accurate)... so what's the point if it's just for highlighting and menus?
I decided to order 2 Sony PRS-505s from Amazon. A lightscreen case as well. Should be here in a week. Looking forward to it... can't wait for the phonecall to go pay the post office for the customs fees... I hope I can pass it off as an IT tool or notebook and pay just the 10% VAT (the import fee is 8% and up). |

| Speaking of ebook readers, does anyone know where I can buy one of the Sony PRS series (I don't have a credit card to order of amazon) or how to use nuutbook.com? |

| I use my i-pod touch to read pdfs. You just need a 5 dollar app. I wouldn't buy it just for reading but it does the job. |
You don't need that apparently. This is free and does it. I'm just trying to figure out what I need to do.

I read it lets you load pdfs from your desktop, but I gotta head out, so I'll check it in more detail when I get back. |

| I've heard that U.S. soldiers can buy the Sony PRS series at the shop on base? Anyone know if this is true? I don't have any soldier friends to confirm this. |

I don't mean to, but *bump* I'm really happy with my Sony PRS-505. It's not great with graphics-heavy PDFs but is quite nice for anything else. It's awesome toting around 100s of books in 600 grams (case included). Gutenberg Project has a million epub booksthat look great on it and Google's controversial move will convert millions of books to epub as well so if you favor the Kindle, be prepared to pay for public domain books.
You can order from Amazon using Paypal but you'll need your billing address to match your shipping address - if you have someone back home who can forward it on to you as a gift, you can avoid the import tax, too.
If you need a credit card to order from Amazon, look into getting a Samsung Card. They're great for foreigners. You might get some hassle with Amazon about confirming your identity... They ended up deleting my order and suspending my account three times and finally allowed it through on the fourth try (a delay of weeks)... each re-try I had to re-create my account and re-place my order. Each time a $1US charge showed up on my card that disappeared later. In the end, I was happy. |
