Well from what I learned in Korea was that the Koreans generally if they saw a black guy thought he was either a GI or African. Ever teach countries to elementary kids with the flash cards they give you? Anyway like I said he has some of his own stereotypes. |

I don't get the people who act like they've never seen this. "Oh only Americans display their flag everywhere!"
C'mon, it was even a line in Canada's favorite commercial, Molson's "I am Canadian." - "I'm proud to sew my flag on my backpack."
It happens. It happens a lot. And I think it might also display the maturity of adults who are walking around with backpacks all the time. Got your bong in there? |

Probably because people in San Diego are so cheap they don't want to buy a flag. |

Canadians aren't your typical flag wavers but Americans sure are (town after town has the stars and stripes littering front doorsteps) so it's ironic that Americans seem most annoyed at seeing Canadians put flags on backpacks.
And indeed many Americans do sport the maple leaf when they travel. Canadian t.v. channel CBC did a short report on the increased sales in a particular chain retailer in Chicago, New York and L.A. of sewn-on Canadian flags in the wake of the shock and awe assault on Baghdad in '03. |

It's actually a pretty expensive city - might fare up there with your beloved Toronto. Anyway, I seem to have struck a nerve. Not sure if it was the bong comment or the Molson commercial, but anyway, sowwwwie. |

I really only remember seeing this once, maybe twice, in my life. On the subway in Seoul years ago some guy had it on his backpack. I believe my buddy took a photo with his phone. Oh, and Lisa Simpson put one on hers when they went to Europe, I think.
I'm not sure how high the nationalism is in Canada. But if you want to see flags and mentions of the homeland, Korea, China and I believe Thailand, to name a few, really cannot get enough of themselves. Even the name of the country is everywhere in local language and English. It's a bit bizarre. It's OK if it is the business name, like, say, "China Mobile," but do we need so many reminders of what country we are in? |

I've got to second Vanislander. Canucks do wear the flag on their bag but if you go to the US, the flag is every where. Canucks don't really do this do much. Although we do wear it alot.
It;s a sort of personal sense of patriotism mostly centered on the fact that we live next to the US, we walk and talk about the same, we buy most of the same stuff, watch American movies (with little of our own), love a sport which has been bought by Americans yet it only the 4th most popular sport in the US. We do feel like the little brother who never made us much money, but loved life and had lots of friends.
We do have entire beer comercials dedicated to this odd form of patriotism centered on not being American.
My father feels he has to send me things with maple leaves on them. I have bandanas, t-shirts, patches (on my wallet too...thanks dad), maple syrup.....god the list goes on.
If you are in the Canuck military....it's the cool thing to get a maple leaf tat.
We are dorks about the leaf. It's true. |

Pretty much! Through our entire history, American Revolution onward, we've been defining ourselves partly by our not being American. I wouldn't say it's anti-Americanism necessarily (although sometimes it turns into that), it's more just a way for us to say "hey we're different!" |
