gullible much

a few weeks ago i was bored, so i sent a blanket email to all the teachers in our school saying that one of our coworkers (foreign male, 30ish) got engaged and would soon be married to a wonderful korean girl.

he was inindated with congratulations from the janitor all the way to the head of the departments within minutes. some were asking if id like to contribute money to a gift or if i had the little "money envelopes" handy. wow, all that within in the hour.

none of the other foreingers bought it. they just said "ah, nice one, haha" but the koreans were all about it. was a little awkward when i had to confess i was just messing with them.

Koreans might be gullible, but what I find more tragic is what passes for humour here. Horses for courses.

"Eruption" that's a good one. Yeah, a lot of my students are easy to fool, too - maybe not to that extent, though.

Speaking of Eddie, I've always liked this.

Yeah....I love looking at their faces and I mimic the tapping solo and intro parts as well. Even though there are many solo guitar pieces you can find now that are more technically impressive than "eruption," I always felt that "eruption" has the feel of a guy just jamming in his house/garage.

Oreovictim, I noticed you like a lot of the same bands/musicians that I do. I remember you mentioned Michael Schenker and Roth before and the Scatterbrain video "Don't call me dude"

Most posters on here just talk about Arcade Fire/Tragically Hip or any of that stuff. Nice to see someone into some quality stuff.

Ha, some Canadians that I've met kept talking either about Tragically Hip or Our Lady Peace. (I think that it was the later.) I checked it out on youtube, and it definitely wasn't my thing.

I prefer technical, melodic guitar players: Schenker, the guys from 'Maiden, selected 'Priest material, etc. It's funny that you mentioned Uli Roth. Most musicians that I've known have never heard of him. His singing is down-right horrible, but, man, can that guy play.

Uli Roth....if you're a guitarist and never heard of him....well...I don't know what to say. Yeah all these people especially on Dave's are crying about Arcade Fire or Sufjan Steven guy. I checked them out on youtube. If that is what passes for good music today...well I guess I'll just look to guys like Dream Theater to keep the dream alive.

Our Lady Peace...yeah I remember them in High School. Singer has somewhat of a whiny voice. Guitar parts are nirvana-esque. No real talent. Now Canadians should be bragging about Rush...now thats some serious stuff...I can never say enough good things about them.

they're not just gullible with us. they're gullibe with each other.

exhibit a:

security guard: The president asked me for cigarrete, and then jumped off a cliff.

korean lemmings: a cigarrrete? hurry, let's buy a billion cartons of cigarretes, so we can line them up in the altars all over the country, to grand his last wish!

security guard: (4 days later) I made it up.

korean lemmings: ??????

HAHAHA...even Hamel was screwing around with them over 300 years ago. Much like the "Mad Cow Weakness" gene they must have the "enhanced gullibility" gene. So much for the superior 민족혈

ahh, a knee slapper. Rolling Eyes

It's funny because the janitor should have known about the foreigner's private life. And the janitor even insisting on a prompt congrulations? What a riot! Who knew that with a system-wide instant messenger system word could spread to everyone in the building within seconds! And they would believe it! Man, those koreans. So gullible.

Edit: I should give you the benefit of the doubt I'm gullible, and you got me. If you weren't joking, though, seriously you need a (better) sense of humor.

Wow. That story brings back memories. I once worked in a bank and was bored to tears, everyday. Once, for fun, I convinced my Chinese woman supervisor, that I was "Getting married in my lunch hour. Nothing serious, just a small registry office ceremoney. I'll be back at work at 1.30pm."

The joke fell flat when she collected money from everyone. Really embarrassing.

I found a certain naivete in some adults. They'd often agree with each other on important things like those rocks and what name the water should have, or how they (personally of course) were cheated in some sporting event. That's OK, no big deal, but then to speak of such important and urgent matters to me or other foreigners is a bit of a stretch. Somehow they seem to forget, if they ever even notice at all, that, really, non-Koreans do not care about these important world issues.

I haven't played any pranks lately, but one from last year comes to mind.

On Peppero day I spent a lesson telling the kids in great detail that the origin of the holiday was that a great king thousands of years ago relieved a famine by giving his people small pieces of bread covered in chocolate.

It was good for their listening skills. They didn't appreciate it so much when I told them I was joking though.

Okay. But Savage Garden..?

Anyway, in terms of gullibility, I told an old girlfriend (old as in previous, she was only 22) that the UK has six seasons. I'd pre-warned a mutual chum who added credence to the scam. I also told one guy that in the UK you have to use formal speech with people younger than you, and that old people cower indoors and don't go out after dark. Hey, that last bit's true!

I love it when complete strangers on the street ask me where I am from. They then have the standard follow-up question: Do you teach English?

I respond with a totally serious expression: No, I teach Korean.

They believe me!!!???? Go figure.

Ha, me too - I'd forgotten about this. It's my standard response when people ask me what I teach. I usually have to tell them "아니요, 영어를 선생님 입니다". Bless them.

so i have basically read about people fooling kids and telling somewhat believable lies to their co-teachers. great guys. i guess if i didn't have any korean friends i too would make blanket statements about this country and try to find new ways to criticize it.

my friend hong shine talking to an american:

hong shine:"i'm from new york city"

american: really? what part?

hong shine: "queens. i born in shea stadium parking lot, i'm from the streets."
