Congratulations, you little tinker! Your comment just made my head explode as it contained some kind of irony-feedback super-loop. Making blanket statements about people making blanket statements... classic

Well done. Now try this one:

A girl rode horseback for 3 days to Montana. She started riding on Wednesday and arrived on Sunday. How is that possible?

Say it ain't so - where's the rock?

Okay. But Savage Garden..?

Anyway, in terms of gullibility, I told an old girlfriend (old as in previous, she was only 22) that the UK has six seasons. I'd pre-warned a mutual chum who added credence to the scam. I also told one guy that in the UK you have to use formal speech with people younger than you, and that old people cower indoors and don't go out after dark. Hey, that last bit's true!

Yeah Savage Garden is pretty gay bro....no argument there. But unfortunately the kids here don't have a taste for good music so I have to hit them with something they can enjoy. If it was up to me...we'd be doing Led Zep, Smiths, and Slayer dictation....but it wouldn't work too well.

Ouch - that's gotta hurt! The Z-Man just put some serious rock n'roll crippler crossface action on Cassette Tape. Someone call CT an ambulance. I hope your health insurance has been correctly deducted from your wages every month. (There are lots of stickies about this topic if you need advice.) Maybe one of your many Korean friends can drive you to the 병원?

They're never gonna learn if you don't teach em. I've used the cure before and that worked pretty well in the classroom. I could see the smiths working as well, in fact I might try it later this afternoon in my after school class. Something like Panic.

Only on Dave's can a group of people criticize a culture for being honest and trusting one post and criticize it for being dishonest and paranoid the next...

We need to exploit this with some sort of Madoff style front and haul 50 million bux each back to the states...

Hmm...so long English Teaching, hello Avon, Ginsu Knives, Kirby Vacuums, and Publishers Clearing House (RIP McMahon)

Or maybe our own FT line of English products advertised on TV with Billy Mays (Kaboom!) or Vince Offer (ShamWow!)

gullible much

a few weeks ago i was bored, so i sent a blanket email to all the teachers in our school saying that one of our coworkers (foreign male, 30ish) got engaged and would soon be married to a wonderful korean girl.

he was inindated with congratulations from the janitor all the way to the head of the departments within minutes. some were asking if id like to contribute money to a gift or if i had the little "money envelopes" handy. wow, all that within in the hour.

none of the other foreingers bought it. they just said "ah, nice one, haha" but the koreans were all about it. was a little awkward when i had to confess i was just messing with them.

ahh, a knee slapper. Rolling Eyes

It's funny because the janitor should have known about the foreigner's private life. And the janitor even insisting on a prompt congrulations? What a riot! Who knew that with a system-wide instant messenger system word could spread to everyone in the building within seconds! And they would believe it! Man, those koreans. So gullible.

Edit: I should give you the benefit of the doubt I'm gullible, and you got me. If you weren't joking, though, seriously you need a (better) sense of humor.

guess it was one of those "had to be there" kind of things. it actually was funny.. reading about it, not so much

Funny...I actually used The Cure's "Friday I'm in Love" this week. It's really good for the days of the week and getting them into some decent pop music...not that superjunior/2pm bullcrap they love.

Using sophisticated translation software, I've converted your post into English - and I think you might enjoy my reply.

I don't think we're necessarily criticising Korea. We're just having a little giggle at the kimchi-munching little tinkers, that's all. I'm a small, petty man (which you've certainly deduced by now) and small, petty things amuse me.

There's definitely mileage in exploiting the credulousness of Korean consumers. Just look at Kia cars! Ba-dum-tish.

I'm surprised you can find it! Laugh out loud.

I did a lesson on music a few weeks ago. Showed the little darlings a load of different clips on YouTube - Dolly Parton, Daft Punk, The Clash, a snippet of Bach, Herbie Hancock, Sean Price, Wayne Wonder, Marvin, and my brother's band Beretta Suicide. I also slipped them a nugget of frothy K-Pop goodness in the form of "Gee". I'd taught them a load of different phrases - "commericialised" (상업적인), "good beat" (좋안 박사), "repetitive" (아이 칸트 래맴브르) - and got them to apply the different phrases to the different bits of music. They actually surprised me; lots of them enjoyed hearing the different music, stuff they hadn't really been exposed to before (although "Rock The Casbah" was pretty roundly condemned).

I haven't played any pranks lately, but one from last year comes to mind.

On Peppero day I spent a lesson telling the kids in great detail that the origin of the holiday was that a great king thousands of years ago relieved a famine by giving his people small pieces of bread covered in chocolate.

It was good for their listening skills. They didn't appreciate it so much when I told them I was joking though.

See, now that's funny. It's harmless and ridiculous, and doesn't play on someone's (or a group of people's) good nature.

When my students showed me a picture of this guy, I told them he was my best friend and that his real name was T-Max. They believed it for a minute.
