http://www.cebupacificair.com/index.html <-- Looking at the prices here made me cry. I could have NOT spent 95% of the money I spent on my round trip ticket to KUL this winter through Sancho (as sweet as he is!)... Coverage and flight frequency isn't as good, but they'll get you to SE Asia.
http://www.airasia.com/ <-- This one is quite well known but is slightly more "expensive", but has more destinations within SE Asia than Cebu, AND also flies to UK and AUS.
http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/ <-- You surely know them, but the best deals are on the website. They're bigger, but have to compete with AA in their home market, so the prices are, compared with what we're used to, still very competitive.
Share experiences with these carriers or link us to more budget airlines if you got 'em. |

http://www.skyscanner.net
is about all you need to know for europe, southeast asia and australia/NZ. it searches all the budget airlines and links you through to their booking site. check the airline site independently as sometimes there is a price difference, but not usually.
i have no experience as to how well it works for the americas or africa.
the map function is brilliant, can look for nearby airports that maybe be cheaper. you can search for the cheapest travel days within an entire month.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_low-cost_airlines
search the budget airlines yourself. with these airlines the lowest fare will almost always be on their site.
http://www.zuji.com
is great for regular airline (read, non-budget) flights out of australia, NZ, singapore, hongkong, korea, india and taiwan where booking direct with the airline is often more expensive.
http://www.expedia.com
is ok, very rarely have i seen a lower price here than on zuji, but still worth checking
http://www.ctrip.com
is great for china
from korea i like http://www.shoestring.co.kr/en-main.htm or http://www.nextour.co.kr/ but not too much experience with either. |

Well, I guess I have to give away another of my secrets. Go to this site, which is a good source for cheap flights if you're leaving a western country, register, and see what you get:

Tobias,
Do the prices get better if you register? The prices and the airlines searched are not good at all if you do the basic search.
I dont feel like registering for the site, even with a spam only email if they dont search the Asian flights as well.
(Most Asian carriers are becoming cheaper while continuing to provide good service. While on the other hand US carriers are dumping services and increasing prices as the US economy and business system crumble under its own stupidity) |

Register using a throw-away email and submit a search. Wait a week. These take time. |
