Hey all, the wife and I are have three weeks in August with nothing to do. Thought about flying home but that's not going to work. We would like to a) escape the heat, and in the alternative b) go sit on a beach somewhere for cheap. Not sure if any of the traditional beach places (Cebu, Thailand, etc.) are good in the summer because of the the monsoons, and that only place I can think of to escape the heat is Siberia.
Any place in Japan that people have been to that might be cooler? |

Thought about that, but for that kind of money we could fly home. |

Why not find a good beach in Korea (other than Haeundae Beach) and hang out there for a while? |

If you want to escape the summer heat but still walk around and enjoy the summer go to Hokkaido.
Hakodate is a beautiful city night and day. Its not a lively place at night but there are plenty of places to eat, drink and have fun. I just didnt find any dance clubs. (didnt look hard at all though)
The temperature is perfect, I was there in late July and it never got into the 80's. Even if it did the cool breeze off the ocean or mountain made it seem like 65 every day.

Sapporo is more inland so you have to rely on the mountain breeze but it is a large metropolitan city, meaning more expensive. I had a lot of fun here as there are a couple festivals and events going on. It is the largest city on the island so everyone goes there for a good time.

Look into it. Hokkaido has all of the charm of Japan and the nice cool summer everyone wants. There are beautiful beaches and all kinds of great food. Its more rural and laid back than the rest of Japan, so it has a more Midwest America feel to it and Sapporo reminds me of Chicago.
There is also a JR rail pass available so you can set up home base at a cheap little beach town (lake or ocean) near a station and just day or weekend trip the hot spots. Thats what I did and I loved it.
The pass gives you unlimited Bus, Rail, Ferry travel on any JR service.

Good luck escaping the heat.

Siberia does get uncomfortably hot in the summer. |

Mongolia is definitely a possibility. Crazy thing is it's the same price to fly to Sapporo, Ulaanbaatar, and Manila. Manila is probably out due to the monsoon season, and my guess is bumming it in Mongolia is cheaper than N. Japan. |

I think we're probably just going to have to stay locally. We decided we would rather deal with the August heat and save some money. We're about 10 mins from Chilpo beach north of Pohang, so at least we have the beach handy. |

Fly to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province in China. From there, take a bus up highway 318 to Kangding (Southwest Bus Terminal). 1 week there in a hostel will give you time to relax. At a tad less than 3000 meters, it's cool. Take some day trips to nearby scenic areas. (Muguo Cuo, Hai Luo Gou glacier, if you're interested) Then, when you feel aclimated, go up over Zhe Duo Mountain (4298 M) to Fei Ji Ba and stay in a Tibetan guesthouse. (3000 M) Ask how to get to Ju Li Temple, and take a pedicab, or if you like walking, walk there in 2-3 hours. After a few days of doing nothing in paradise, take a bus to Tagong Grasslands (3300 M) and stay there for 2 or three days. Explore the area with it's triangular clusters of pray flags, get a guide to take you by horse farther into the grasslands.
When you're running out of time, take a bus back to Kangding and rest. Enjoy the hot springs there. Go back to Chengdu, see some pandas and then come home.
My two cents. |
