Funny...I actually used The Cure's "Friday I'm in Love" this week. It's really good for the days of the week and getting them into some decent pop music...not that superjunior/2pm bullcrap they love. |
Lemme guess you get it from ddeubels site? That's where I found the Karaoke version anyhow. |

I've never been to that site. I just get the lyrics and edit them myself. |

"Eruption" that's a good one. Yeah, a lot of my students are easy to fool, too - maybe not to that extent, though.
Speaking of Eddie, I've always liked this.

Yeah....I love looking at their faces and I mimic the tapping solo and intro parts as well. Even though there are many solo guitar pieces you can find now that are more technically impressive than "eruption," I always felt that "eruption" has the feel of a guy just jamming in his house/garage.
Oreovictim, I noticed you like a lot of the same bands/musicians that I do. I remember you mentioned Michael Schenker and Roth before and the Scatterbrain video "Don't call me dude"
Most posters on here just talk about Arcade Fire/Tragically Hip or any of that stuff. Nice to see someone into some quality stuff. |
Ha, some Canadians that I've met kept talking either about Tragically Hip or Our Lady Peace. (I think that it was the later.) I checked it out on youtube, and it definitely wasn't my thing.
I prefer technical, melodic guitar players: Schenker, the guys from 'Maiden, selected 'Priest material, etc. It's funny that you mentioned Uli Roth. Most musicians that I've known have never heard of him. His singing is down-right horrible, but, man, can that guy play. |
Uli Roth....if you're a guitarist and never heard of him....well...I don't know what to say. Yeah all these people especially on Dave's are crying about Arcade Fire or Sufjan Steven guy. I checked them out on youtube. If that is what passes for good music today...well I guess I'll just look to guys like Dream Theater to keep the dream alive.
Our Lady Peace...yeah I remember them in High School. Singer has somewhat of a whiny voice. Guitar parts are nirvana-esque. No real talent. Now Canadians should be bragging about Rush...now thats some serious stuff...I can never say enough good things about them. |
Rush is absolutely amazing. I can't say anything bad about them.
About guitars, it all depends on what type one is looking into. I love the sound of electric guitar. Typically I stick to 60s/70s and 80s stuff when I really want to hear good guitar. For newer music I can't think of many examples of great guitarists that play the type of music I like.
It seems music has taken a turn away from the glamour guitar of the 80s and early 90s.
About the OPs post:
I went and interviewed for this job once. The guy interviewing me was used to foreign humor and when I told them I couldn't start until a certain date because I was getting married and going on my honeymoon they thought I was joking. I was always confused how in an INTERVIEW they would think I would be making jokes.
I can't even begin to count the ways I've tricked my old students. I think one of the best was when I told them that myself and another foreign teacher picked up one of the teacher's cars and moved it. They believed we could pick up a matiz and carry it...hmm maybe we could have actually done that |

Back on topic.
I took over the geography teacher's class one day near the beginning of the term. He is a good friend of mine and I decided to play a prank on the class with him as the centerpiece.
The class told me that all he does is mostly show movies and they thought he was a bit lazy. Note that this was grade 9 and pretty much all the students speak english very well. Some speak english at home even though they are Lao.
I asked them if they had ever seen a picture of teacher X when he was young. They said no. I told them to ask to see one. They asked why. I told them to look at the colour of his eyes. Now they are blue but when he was young they were very dark brown, like an Asian's eyes.
I told the kids that their teacher was so lazy when he was younger that he was actually to lazy to see and eventually went blind and had to have an eye transplant
They swallowed it hook line and sinker.
Then I told them that because he is still so lazy that when he is awake he has to keep reminding himself to breathe. But, when he is sleeping he cannot do so. Thus he has to sleep in an iron lung or he will die!!!
Again...success!
Class ended and I went to my friend and told him everything. We laughed and he decided to totally play it up.
The next day the kids were all over him and he played along to perfection. "I can't help it, it's a genetic problem" etc etc
So they decided to help and went to the computer lab to research the disease to help their teacher. Incredible!
They actually learned a lot about technology, transplants and lethargy due to various diseases.
We kept them on the string for a couple of weeks. After we told them the truth they were all shy but mostly said they never believed the story but only went along to play a trick on us
Lots of fun. My old man used to yank my chain something fierce when I was young. |

only once many years ago I played a trick on a class of students.
it ws a class of mostly boys and they were always asking me what my shit looked like and smelled like and what colour it was.
one day I started saying "canadians dont shit" and I kept saying yes really whenever they asked really?
this caused a lot of confusion in my school and eventually a teacher who could speak english came up to me and said "really!?"
I was so embarassed and saddened by them that I never made any jokes again |

Am I the only one here who thinks these kind of sarcastic replies and hoddwinkers, while hilarious (and I'm guilty of it too), are partly responsible for the stereotypes and negative perceptions of NETs? Is praying on people's gullibility really something to share stories about?
Well I am going to...Instead of telling people I was adopted, I just told them that I had two mommies and two daddies....then it became four mommies and four daddies....and I was taken out of each's womb.
But I make sure not to tell these kind of whoppers to any of my students or sober adults...only with my non-mob affiliated Korean drinking buddies. Credibility and maturity has to be maintained. |
