My school recently told its teachers that they would not be allowed (according to the Ministry of Health) to teach for one week if they took their vacations abroad. We have a week off end of July, just like many others.
So, IF we decide to take a vacation outside of Korea, we must a) lose a week of pay, b) find a substitute teacher and c) pay that sub from our own pocket.
Needless to say, there is a bit of an uproar.
I would like to know if other teachers (E2 visa holders) have heard similar things from their directors.
I would also love to know how this "one week of no teaching" is to be enforced. Would they just call the school and "make sure" that teacher is not working? Does my school face fines or penalties if a "vacation-yes" teacher shows up to work two days later?
I would call Immigration, or the Ministry of Health, if I thought that would do anything. Phone calls to "officials" don't work out here in Korea. I think word of mouth from other teachers at other schools is the only information I can trust. |

Your school is lying to you.
Unless you agree, if they tell you not to come to work after visiting a foreign country (remember, it must be in writing - 'verbal' doesn't count) and they refuse to pay you, they will be in breach of contract.
How you deal with it is up to. |

Demand to see the specific order from the Ministry of Health. As there is no such order, your boss will be caught out immediately.

That would be illegal. Your employer cannot dock you pay because he's refusing to put you in front of a class.

b) find a substitute teacher |
If your contract actually has a clause requiring you to find your own substitute when the boss refuses to put you in front of a class when you are willing to be there, then you have the worst contract in the country.

Again, that would be illegal. The substitute is not working for you, they're working for your boss and therefore the substitute's employer--not you--is responsible for paying them.

No doubt.

Another E-2 visa holder made a thread about his hagweon. I posted some pertinent comments there.

It's not going to be. Why? Because there's no such order.

None of the above as there's no such order.

Here's the deal. Your lying sack of dung director specifically stated that there's a Ministry of Health order to the effect that you will be prohibited from teaching for a period of one week. Your lying sack of dung director needs to show you said order or quit jerking you around.
Another option is to tell the dung heap that he's a liar and that if he pulls his planned stunt on you then you will go to the Labor Board so fast that it'll make gods blink. |

Just don't mention where you are going...after all, do you tell him when you go to Seoul for the weekend? |

That's ridiculous. I work for public school and am going to New York City for 3 weeks in July and nobody has said a word to me.
I do know a woman who arrived here and was asked not to teach for a week, but she was paid for it.
Tell 'em you'll take kimchi with you and eat the hell out of it. |

LOL... Yeah! I can't figure out why Ks are afraid of degi flu when all food here is 'well be' food... and acts as a prophylaxis for every sickness. |
