I'm genuinely curious about why someone who purports to make a living educating someone in the English language would choose to make all of their posts without capital letters or punctuation. It really does distract from whatever the message is supposed to be. |

because it's the internet, it's anonymous, less keystrokes, and nobody is checking for grammar/punctuation.
just embrace it. |

i guess you could call it slight laziness on my part, but i call capitalization an unnecessary burden when using the internet. i see the main purpose of language is communication.
there are many levels and kinds of communication. i cannot see how any of these are influenced in any way by the caps lock button; except, perhaps, if we are trying to communicate to someone how to type english correctly.
is there anyone on this board in need of being taught how to type english?
if communication is effective, then the goal is attained. |

maybe it simply illustrates the general lack of respect for the forum as a palatable platform for psuedo-intellectual discourse and not any concious malfescence.
also people dont check their spelling. i guess i probebly could, but that would require more effort than I'd like to put into a post on Dave's.
Also, be careful about calling out other people for grammatical/syntax issues because there are plenty of English teachers on here who will tear your posts apart.
live and let lived. |

Go for it. I'm clearly not talking about the occasional mistake. |

At first I thought this post meant they weren't "capitalizing" or profiting from their talents.
Also, the posters are not simply "purporting" to making a living, they likely are making an acceptable wage teaching regardless if they are experienced or knowledgeable.
Also, I found some of the verb tenses in your post confusing. I think, "I'm genuinely curious as to why someone who purports to making a living educating someone in the English language would choose to make all [omitted] posts without capital letters or punctuation" would flow much better.

Texting is very different. Only 40 characters allowed.
When typing for a message board you have a full keyboard and almost unlimited allowance of characters.
Personally, I'm not a NAZI about it. I think I've only pointed out spelling and grammar to one poster a couple of years ago who spelled the word 'one' as 'won' and the word 'two' as 'too'!! That person could have been dyslexic. I hope they were! But still, the thought that that person was teaching kids English was horrifying.
As for the excuse that it's just a message board and people shouldn't have to concentrate hard to get their spelling and grammar correct......well.....fair enough.....but any game is kind of ruined when some participants don't try much.
I'd rather up my grammar and spelling game here on Dave's and feel some pride in being in the company of other educated English speakers than to have to read text-speak from people who can't be bothered.
Do U fink wot I is rite m8?
I'm on the verge of de-friending a couple of Facebook people because their text-speak is so incredibly constant, annoying and intentional.
(yes, I'm aware I make mistakes too, but you get the point). |

i may not bother to capitalize or punctuate a lot these days but i'm at least vigilant about spelling and attentive to grammar
there's a big difference between making a mistake and choosing a style |

yep. it's the internet. doesn't it bother you that urls aren't case-sensitive? same goes for e-mail addresses.
BUT IF YOU PREFER WE COULD CHANGE TO ALL-CAPS USERS. |

Let me get this straight. Some folks are too busy to capitalize their %&*#ing "I"s?
It's a stylistic choice? Some people are too cool for capitalization? Look out. They've gone EXXXTREME. They don't play by the rules. They're on the move, shaking things up, getting things done, and taking us kicking and screaming into the new millenium. Extra keystroke. No time. How can I be perceived as a wild and slightly dangerous cutting-edge renegade if I'm thoughtful and patient enough to punctuate?
Get real. This isn't Footloose and you aren't Kevin Bacon. No one is keeping you down. Grow up. Express yourself like an educated adult if you want to be treated like one.
Oh, but successful communication is all that matters!
I can usually get what I want with grunts and gestures. Shall I be satisfied with that?
No one is "checking" your posts. It's simply impossible to overlook some errors. A post rife with "i"s and whatever other nonsense is painful to read. You could be posting the cure for cancer but if you are writing like an idiot, I'm going to think you're an idiot.
What? You're not trying to impress me?
I'm not the only one reading. |
