We are in the middle of final exams at my boys middle school. After invigilating approx. 48 exams over the past two years, I caught my first cheater this morning - during a grade one, multiple choice P.E. exam.

WHO CHEATS ON A FRIGGIN" P.E. EXAM? UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! Rolling Eyes

Let me guess, the question was:

Jumping rope will make you:

a) fatter
b) taller
c) shorter
d) none of the above.

So many kids tell me that jumping rope will make them taller. That is what they are being told in P.E. class.

I don't know... but I'll bet the kid's ass will be a lot sorer after his parents are 'called in' to have a chat with the vice principal. Laughing

That sounds like my second-year HS student who thought that drinking more milk would make her taller. Sorry, but at age 17 all that milk is only going to make you fatter and give you acne.

Playing basketball makes you taller.

I was dating a well educated Korean woman last year and I brought this up. She told me she thought it was true. Her explanation? When you jump, gravity affects you less. Basketball players jump a lot, so they spend less time being affected by gravity. Thus, they grow taller. QED. Science!

Koreans fixated on ways to grow taller? Who'd've thunk it?

I can't be bothered to catch people cheating. Seems like a lot of effort and just extra work when you catch someone.

What extra work? If anything, there's less. The grading of that paper immediately stops and a zero is entered. Done. Next.

Don't be too sure about that. In my experiences and that of my friends, cheating is not highly frowned upon and commonly goes unpunished. You can ingrain guilt upon the younger kids (especially when they begin to rat each other out) but it is not treated as a serious crime. I know my wonjangnim always laughed at them about how clever they were, and then had a stern talk to me about how cheating was a problem.

I had one class of high school aged students where every single one of them cheated on a vocab test. The best one was with a guy who had the words written on the tiny, white eraser on his mechanical pencil. Clever kids.

Honestly, a P.E. exam! LMAO Laughing

Funny, I always play out different scenarios of catching students cheating when I proctor exams. I dunno, your mind tends to wander when you're just sitting there giving stern looks for 45 minutes.

Caught your first cheater? I don't believe you. Korean students don't cheat. They just need a little extra help and rely on the Jung of their classmates to provide it.

I had students tell me the same thing so I explained to them that was silly. A little arguement went on so I asked the rest of the staff in the office across the hall to back me up, my boss and 2 co workers sided with the kids. Just made me sad. They spend so much time on science here, must skip the human phys part.

Cheating or 'cunning' isn't necessarily wrong here - especially if it's done under the guise of a higher value , such as 'loyalty' (usually to family). However, getting caught cheating is wrong (shaming your family?).

I once told a PS middle school teacher that kids were cheating in class, and she just said: "Yes, they're very smart students." Anyone remember the snuppy dog guy?
