I am interested to know if Foreigners can have/get the stamp/seal thingys that korean people use for signatures (in the red ink).

I usually give out good quality certificates to my students at the end of a course (winter vacation course, first/second semester, etc) and I figured having a stamp to place alongside my signature on the certificate would give the certificates more of a "Korean" look for the benefit of the kids.

If yes - do I just go to any of the "stamp/seal shops" how much does it cost? and wht do I need to take with me - just my ID card?

Sure you can get one.

You can get your name in Korean or Chinese characters (if you can get someone to translate your name for you)

Cost is determined by quality and type. The self inking ones are maybe 10-20k while the wood ones are like 5k. The hand carved wood ones are 100k as are the crystal ones.

Just go with a self stamping one (ink inside)

Stamp shops are everywhere, pretty sure you wont have a problem.

You can also get your name done in English. Or any symbol you want. Those old boys will do anything.

you can get the stamps anywhere...that's not a problem. HOWEVER, if you want to make it an 'official' stamp, you need to go to your local 'dong/ku' office. i bought a NEW car and had to get my name stamp registered at the municipal office. i think i was the first foreigner to do so, but it was pretty painless.

There is a man who sells them outside exit 2 of Kangnam station. Probably cheaper than a store...

Can you tell me - to make it an 'official' stamp, do I go to my local 'dong/ku' office - before I have it made - or after I have had it made - and does it have to be the office where i live - or can I just go to the one next to my school? (more convenient)

I am not sure it will be "official" as you do not have a legal name which can be written in hanja.

How does a foreigner acquire a have a legal name which can be written in hanja? And what do Koreans with pure Korean names with no Hanja do?

In case you can't read the korean, a chop is 'dojang'

I see places that have 'dojang' signs all overt the place. Most places that cut keys do it. I got my name in Chinese...but I got it done in Hong Kong..so it was easy of course.

i got a name stamp as a gift a few years ago, and just had it for 'fun'. it just has my english name written in hangul.

when i bought my car, i went to the municipal office for the area on my registration card. as far as i know, that's where you have to get it done. it doesn't matter if you have a hanja name -- you can have anything as long as it's registered.
as i said, they may look at you like your from mars, but it is possible to do it. i had to take a couple passport photos and i think it cost a few thousand won...that's it. i had to fill out some papers, but i managed to do it all by myself.
