I'm being offered a job to teach at a public school in Seoul for this fall and have been asked for a preference of location. The only thing is, I don't really know the areas in Seoul. Can anyone recommend any places inside of Seoul that are not too busy/hectic (clean, quiet, safe neighborhood) that is still not too far from the hip happening places like Apgu, etc.? I realize everyone has their own preferences, etc. but it would be nice to get some feedback and hear people's thoughts, even if it is just your personal opinion. Just as good would be definite places to avoid!

| North of the Han River (Gang-buk) is generally more ghetto than South of the Han River (Gang-nam). Streets are generally cleaner, wider, and more modern in Gang-nam. However, be prepared to pay more in rent if you're in Gang-nam. |

Seoul is a huge city with a very good public transportation infrasctucture. I've been here two years and haven't really come across an area of Seoul that I would consider clean, quiet, and not hectic. I have, however, never felt unsafe anywhere in Korea.
If you're applying to a public school, you'll very likely have little to no say in where you are placed. If you're going for a hagwon (and, why would you?), your priorities lie in finding a reputable one; not in finding the most desireable place to live.

What you put under preferences will be ignored.
They pick up the first applicant and offer them the first job, process is repeated until all jobs are filled.(Obviousuly, this is after they've interviewed and vetted the applicants and decided who they want.) If your location or level matches your job, everybody wins. If it doesn't then they say "sorry all the xyz positions are full". |

| Konkuk meets that criteria depending on which side of the train tracks you live....the entertainment area and Uni is on one side, the other side has plenty of trees, greenery, quiet areas, restourants....the otherside has most of the uni students. |

All of these qualities are obviously opinions. So, yes. Perhaps if you're coming from LA, Seoul will feel like Eden. |

keep in mind that there is also gangbuk-gu north of the river, which is simply a ward. no real reason to live in that gu, but there are plenty of great places north of the han that are hardly "ghetto." furthermore, with itaewon, jongno, hongdae, shinchon, hyehwa and countless other interesting places north of the river, i'd argue that you choose to live on the northside for character and fun.
sure, gangnam, apgujeong and jamsil have their charms, but i think of that general stretch south of the river as bland and monotinous. in a city where wandering out of any given subway station will lead you to essentially the same surroundings (family mart, paris baguette, gimbap whatever, the face shop, etc.), that's saying something.
then again, i live in uijeongbu now. life isn't what it used to be. |
