You know, part of the reason we aren't portrayed as serious people on TV is because it's not interesting.
It's just like our classrooms. They don't want some serious educated professor talking scholarly about English acquisition.
People want bozo the clown with funs games and candy and jokes. |

Funny, all this time I thought television was a valuable educational tool that appealed to the highest levels of human intellect. Thanks to this thread I now know that that isn't true in Korea. Thank goodness American TV still follows those principles.
There is a fine, perpendicular line between where I would accept a degrading, sterotype enforcing role and where I would not. It is the line between that eigth and ninth zero on the checkbook line.
Who am I kidding? it's between the sixth and the seventh.
If you think doing such roles is truly selling out, you don't know what selling out is.

Well, I've spent enough time with a wide variety of Koreans to say that that statement applies to only a good 40-60% of the people here. Trust me, there is more going on there than what you think. And there are people here who think differently about things. But yes some just go with the herd. We have a similar phenomenon in America- it is called MTV and reality shows and professional wrestling and Fox News.

Which is why CSI is found right next to Bozo on the DVD rack here in Korea and has a laugh track on the Korean channel it's shown on.
Or maybe Koreans DO have the critical thinking to understand that some of those shows are exaggerated and some are 'comedy' shows.
Then again, sounds like some people on this board don't have the 'critical thinking' to realize that or credit the people here for knowing that to be the case.
Who knows? maybe someone from Korea watched Jerry Springer or Fear Factor and decided that sensationalism, violence, and people acting like morons makes a quick buck. Look at the people who go on Springer and tell me that that isn't media exploitation of one group to pander to the audience of another group. (The poor and uneducated for the benefit of the middle-class and educated for those of you who can't connect dots or see exploitation in America)
That's the media. That's what they do. It's all in the game. It's not Korea. It's the media. Lowbrow sells.
No different than 'Lockup' on MSNBC. "We have an inmate throwing feces in cell 48" seems to be in the same spirit as "Hey I saw this drunken idiot waygookin on the street. Let's do a bit about drunken idiot waygookin."

I don't know if my old coworker's friends are homophobic. I just assume they are because they're like the old coworker in every other way. Man, you couldn't do anything without him questioning your sexuality. I remember the first time the school had an office party. He had a concerned look because I was drinking my beer out of a glass. He actually told me a few times that he was worried that I was gay. So what did I do? I made sure to stick my pinky out when I was drinking, of course.
Other things, too. You're gay if you don't like this sport or that sport. You're gay if you dress nice, etc, etc. |

You can't win either way, can you!
I'm glad I don't work for that guy because I don't like ANY sport. |

I know a foreign regular on TV...for starters, pay was OK and work was long and competitive...second, many roles are done by russians or eastern Europeans who work for cheaper than western actors.....I imagine they could care less about "Our Image abroad"...especially since they play American white people, not russians.
Tomato, most koreans I've met like foreigners to learn the language....I get free stuff, women respect me more and want to date me, regular koreans like the fact I can get things across to them easily. More folks want to be my friend and talk to me as opposed to running away in fear....
C'mon....unless they're a student in english or from a western country, they prefered me speaking korean.....
Some act susprised you speak korean, but most are positive about it....I haven't had anyone think or say "why is that black dude speaking korean?? Damn him to hell for order his meal in Korean!!!! DaeHanMinGook forever!!" |

Contrary to some peoples opinion the sole motivating factor in Korean men's lives isn't the 'threat' of foreign men taking 'their' women.
Just because there are a few stories thrown about in the media dosent mean the whole media complex is looking to trash the foreigner.
Frankly I think this more speaks to the narcissism of some FTs than Korean society. The same people who wonder why Korean laws arent implemented with the foreign teacher in mind are the same people who carry on about this massive media conspiracy to trash foreigners.
The truth is 99% of Koreans dont go about their day with thoughts about the waygookin going on in their mind. Especially your coworkers, students, and neighbors.
Face it they dont care as much about you as you wish they did. No, their lives don't revolve around you. |

I don't think you can deny that Koreans tend to swallow their own slanted "journalism" to an inordinately large degree. I've never been in a country that had such a dearth of alternative perspectives, viewpoints, ways of thinking and opinions.
...theres a difference between legitimate criticism and "racism". |
