So, I work in a Seoul public school (like many of us) and I have a 13 day summer camp coming up that is at a different school. I was asked by my school to do an extra camp at my school during the same time as this 13 day camp, but after it... so I would work 9 to 12 at one school and 2 to 4 at my school.

At first I was told I would be paid, which is why I agreed to do it even though one day is on a Saturday and working at two schools is a problem; but I want to support my school and the extra would not hurt. Yesterday, I was told there would be no money.

I just wanted to ask how many of you have worked at two different public school camps on the same days like this?

Laughing No kidding. Uhmmm, seriously, this sort of happened to me once..not two camps at 2 different schools, in one day Smile but being promised money and then, the school saying, oh sorry, we made a mistake. Now, I get the person in charge to spell it out to me and my co-teachers on paper(so they have seen it and can back me up). You live and learn. Have fun with that.

Always tell them "yes" & "ok" with a big smile.

When it comes time to teach your camps. Tell them, "I am SICK of getting lied to."

I'm doing this for camp this year. I have four days of of six hours plus two Saturdays and some miscellaneous 3 hour days. I took the liberty of adding two days to my vacation (will be out of the country) for the Saturdays and asked for overtime for the extra hours. When the POE saw my plane tickets they flipped and told me to change it. I just said "Not possible" and stood my ground. They flicked the decision down the chain to my Principal (to save face) and she said "fine". They flatly refused the overtime which I was willing to eat, but yesterday my co-teach told me they were chipping in for the overtime. So, it worked out great for me. Laughing

I guess my advice is to stand your ground.

It all depends on your contract. In mine (GEPIK), it is clearly written that I shall work up to a mximum of 20 hours a week during camps.

You didn't give us all the details about your schedule, but from what you wrote I believe you would have to work more than 20 hours/classes a week; therefore, you'd be entitled to either say no to the second camp or get OT pay for it.

Take a look at your contract.

Remember if your school wants to pile on the camps that 22 classes is all you have to do. Anything over 22 classes is paid overtime and you have the option to refuse ovetime classes.

Really? When I worked for GEPIK there was a clause in the contract there that said they could ask us to work an additional six hours per week.

Has that been removed?

But the above digression aside, you can also legally refuse Saturday work as well.

I am at a SMOE school 22 hours a week; no Saturdays. A school hour is normally a 45 minute class. For the camp not at my school, I will be paid 30k a day which is for lesson plans and transportation. IMO, 30k a day is nowhere near a real wage; it is a thank you gift. Last winter, they paid me 40k a child; that was at my extra school camp. Not a lot of money, but again we should teach at the camps.

What I do not like now is the fact that I was told I would get paid. Now I am not and yet teaching at two schools on the same days. I am a little happy; this is my last contract in Korea. I have liked it, but it is getting to me these days.
