Country Music fest down at Woodbine Park in Toronto...

It was meant to rain yesterday but not a drop in sight...

It was good fun...

Actually Toronto was pretty poor for Canada day...Most people I saw were not wearing red or celebrating it at all...

I hear Ottawa is the place to be for Canada day...Next year i'll be there...

Jazz Fest and CeleFete at Montreal. It was certainly packed downtown. Good fun. Didn't get a chance to see the fireworks though.

I spent the day talking with students about universal healthcare, multiculturalism, maple leaves, beavers, Canadian Geese, moose, polar bears, the CFL, ice hockey, curling, snow mobiles, the Inuit, the Quebecois, Summer & Winter Olympics, canoeing, lakes, back bacon, beer, nanaimo bars, butter tarts, coffee crisp, Tim Horton's, Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, Terry Fox, Niagara Falls, saying sorry when someone hits you in a crowd, snowbirding in Arizona and Florida, the Rocky Mountains, the TransCanada Highway, the CBC, the Northern Lights, loonies, toonies, salmon, eh? and 6/49.

Here in Victoria I hung out with friends down by the Legislature, where we watched a crappy concert on the lawn, then watched the fireworks down by the Inner Harbour. There were thousands of people cramming the Inner Harbour area, it was nuts. On the way out we saw cops break up a fight among drunken girls, and further down the street cops pinning some person with no pants on to the street.

I feel sorry for cops on Canada Day!

I'll bet they loved it! Nothing more students love than listening to teachers go on and on about their countries.

Canada Day is a day off to go fishing, camping, canoeing or have a pool party or whatever. For me, anyway. Because it's a long weekend.

Actually, they did love it... but no, I don't teach by babbling on and on. (Anyone who's done the CELTA doesn't bore students by expecting them to be passive listeners in class.)

I made a game of it, having the students guess 'the Top-100 Reasons Canadians love Canada' from a msn online news story I printed off, the students getting more points the closer their guess is to the top of the list, the winning teams getting stickers from Canada (maple leaves mostly, some mounties and beavers) and I had my family send over maple candy as prizes. I gave hints at times and when a team guessed right I threw in a sentence or two. Bonus point for answering a question I threw in here and there. Everyone was on the edge of their seats. It was a fun day for everyone.
