|
|
For those of us teaching public elementary school, you may have run across this one.
Todays lesson was called "Who is she?"
The answer they wanted to elicit was She is Ann. This does not sound right to me. I have never responded to that question that way. I might say, she is my friend or maybe, That's /It's Ann.
Same thing with Who are they? They are Tony and Ann. doesn't look right at all. It does make sense i guess, but sounds strange.
I was wondering about your thoughts and comments. If i am right, i will try to set this right. If I am wrong, well, that would bother me.
If i wanted someone's name I wouldn't ask Who is she? What's her name ? would be a better question right? I have a feeling that Who is she? is asking for the relationship between her and me. |

They just want to keep the curriculum as simple as possible. Agreed, it has many grammatical & speech errors, even by the native speaker child actors. eg, "She has a long hair". The directors weren't paying attention? I heard that the current program is being scrapped next year, in favour of a new elementary school program, starting in March 2010.
I would say: 'That's Ann'. 'They're Tony & Ann'.

it's NOT wrong, there is a simple grammar drill purpose behind it.
agree that native speakers in normal settings would say that's ann, her name is ann but ID ing people around the room by their pronoun is not inherently incorrect.
in fact it's a pronoun grammar drill , nothing more. Go with it. |

As other posters already said, it's made to be simple. If you have more advanced students, teach them alternative vocabulary. It's for 4th grade, right? My 4th graders are pretty advanced for their age, so I took the opportunity to teach them different ways of asking the same question and different ways of answering it. |

Thanks for pointing out that it's not wrong. Ya, its for the 4th grade.
I only have a handful of bright kids in each class. I think teaching them alternate vocabulary in different situations is still a great idea. Thanks. |

Gotta be a troll. If not Op, please leave the country immediately.
Further, it's depressing the kind of answers that are showing up on this board in support of the Op.
If any of you feel "She is Ann" is grammatically incorrect, please tender your resignation and make plans to return to your home country. For the children's sake, please leave. Do the right thing...
Next you will start suggesting "I am Peter" is wrong....

"She has a long hair" is definitely wrong. That was from a previous lesson, 'She is Tall'. |

Grammatically wrong? No.
If the intent of the statement is to say that (all) the hair she has is long then yes it fails to convey the intended message.
However, if in fact she has a (single) long hair, say growing from her chin, then it works for me. |

Not familiar with said lesson in context. If there was an accompanying picture then, yes as I stated it does not convey the appropriate message. I was just saying the sentence in and of itself was not grammatically incorrect. Peace. |

I don't think the OP is a troll. Just an honest deficiency in his mastery of English. Can't say this is the first time you've seen this, nor will it be the last.
Remember, most "teachers" here didn't get such hot grades in their high school or college english classes either. Most are just winging it as they go, learning ALONG with the kids. |

lol...she has a long hair...
The listen & repeat have Nami saying 'she has long hair' and so do the subtitles. To be honest, there are so many mistakes from the PS curriculum it could drive a good boy mad.
doo-do-do-do-do-do-do he is good
doo-do-do-do-do-do-do he is good
....oh yes, he is, he is wonderful (???)
that's my uncle, oh-oh! he is good! |

Actually, I often came first in my class for English. Incidentally, 'English' is always spelt with a captial 'E', never lower case.

But then the American child actor 'Kevin' or 'Ann'? (forget which one) clearly states "She has a long hair."
Thanks for the laugh, mt01ap, & agreed, there are quite a few other errors in the PS curriculum, too. |
