I'm going to be working for SMOE starting this August/September. Is there a certain dress code for SMOE? Are we supposed to dress in corporate business attire or can we show up to teach in more casual clothes? I'm just wondering if I need to bring a few nice dress suits over (by the way i am female). |

Business attire isn't necessary.
For everyday teaching, semi-causal is fine. During the winter I wore sweaters, hoodies, and a few some button-down long sleeve shirts. Trousers are fine and, at least I at school, jeans are fine too.
It's not a bad idea to pack some business wear for when you first go to your new school and make an impression like that. |

One of the weird (to western minds) things about K-land is that in PSs male and female teachers are held to different standards when it comes to dress.
As a female, you will find almost anything is acceptable (just couch it under the guise of 'fashion').
Males are (in general) held to a more conservative standard. This is changing (slowly). Last year, I noticed a young, male K teacher wearing jeans one day (I also noticed his contract was not renewed after his first term with the school).
You will probably find the unwritten, acceptable 'norms' of the local 'dress code' vary in direct proportion to the square of the distance from Seoul. However, just because you will be with SMOE, doesn't mean you can dress like Christina A. in a music video... almost, but not quite.
Best advice - err on the side of 'conservative' when you first arrive... you can 'relax' from there. |

yeah, of course you can were skirts. There are some K-teachers wearing short-skirts and somewhat short-shorts during the summer. But you might want to keep it more conservative, so nothing too short at school. |

This explains why Ks can't look where they're going when they're going up the stairs. How do you explain why they can't look where they're going when they're going down? |

The foreigner men in my hagwon can wear shorts, but one day when I wore calf length shorts they were shocked. I think it's because I had a shaved head back then too, and I wasn't wearing my wig when they saw me, so it was all too much boyishness for them to handle. As long as you look like a girl, it's fine. So grow your hair real long and wear some makeup. Not too much eyeshadow, because then they will just stare at you. And cover your shoulders. You can show your ass in this place, but not your breasts or bra straps. |
