How long are you going for? I'm no health expert, so I guess I should not be giving any advice, as shouldn't anyone else without health qualifications but I will say if you're just going for a couple of weeks, you should be OK
I skipped the Hep shot when I went to India for 3 months a few years ago as my doc said it's not going to kill you if you're healthy, but then again it's really quite unpleasant if you do get it.
Fact is, it's not fun getting sick in a place like India, it's a filthy place with many nasty bugs floating around so why risk it just to save some money?
South Korea and Thailand are clean compared to India. I wouldn't say it's a scam keeping up to date with your shots, it's good to know at least you won't be getting hep and typhoid.

I got my India visa in Bangkok.
The visa prices were something like 1 entry, $20; 2 entry, $40; Multiple entry, $100 (all 1 year). Then there was a big sign that said if you are US citizen you must pay $100 for any kind of visa. Only levied against US citizens, spelled out in big letters. So I asked for the multiple entry visa. Lady said no, 2 entry (for $100) is all I can get without business sponsor.
India's big and interesting and great food and great places; but if they don't want me there, Nepal and Sri Lanka are just as good.

Vaccinations can have bad effects on your health, do the reading and then decide. 5 years visas are quite tough to come by these days. Most of us get 6 month visas. You tend to get sick in India from stuff you eat and vaccinations don't protect you from that. Just stay away from areas with malaria.
