Hey gang. I'm going to start teaching English in Daejeon in August, and was wondering if anyone else is teaching in Daejeon right now. I've done preliminary research about the city itself and have come to the conclusion that I'll love it there. But as always, I look to the internet and to strangers (and to Dave's) for the best information I know I'll find. I have a few questions, such as:
- What's the foreign (not necessarily foreign teacher) population like?
- How is the nightlife? I am still young and do enjoy the occasional bar or nightclub.
- Are there good theaters (movies & shows)? Generally a question about the cultural involvement, how invested people are, the quality of venues, etc.
- Besides all the surrounding mountains to visit, what other less-popular, natural attractions exist nearby, or within?
- What is the apartment market like? Friendly to foreigners? Or will I be staying in an Officetel or dorm-style place with other teachers?
- I've read the public transportation is extensive and efficient. How easy is it to get around by bike? AND might it be cost-effective to buy a car? A Daewoo, perhaps?
And any other advice that is valuable in regards to teaching English in Daejeon is more than welcome. I am more than a bit nervous about moving there, but am keeping an open-mind about most everything.
I'm looking forward to the MudFest next year! I know Daejeon is near where it happens. If anyone is going to it in 2010, let me know, I'll go with you. |

I was once told Daejeon has around 3,000 foreigners... I was surprised but you never know!

Night life's fine. There are a few areas - downtown, Gung-dong, Dunsan..

There are quite a few movie theatres if that's what you mean by *theaters* (or perhaps I should say cinemas).

Gong-ju is right next door.. Geumsan, Nonsan etc. Daejeon isn't a crowded place to begin with...

You will likely get given a single studio apt in a villa close to your school.

Yes, Daejeon buses are fine and taxis are not expensive. There's one subway line, more are planned. You can get a car if you want but it's not that cost-effective.. but that's only me HO.
There are a few threads about Daejeon already, perhaps you could do a search. |
