Washington Post cancels lobbyist event amid uproar
Washington Post publisher Katharine Weymouth said today she was canceling plans for an exclusive "salon" at her home where for as much as $250,000, the Post offered lobbyists and association executives off-the-record access to "those powerful few" Obama administration officials, members of Congress, and even the papers own reporters and editors.
The astonishing offer was detailed in a flier circulated Wednesday to a health care lobbyist, who provided it to a reporter because the lobbyist said he felt it was a conflict for the paper to charge for access to, as the flier says, its health care reporting and editorial staff."
With the Post newsroom in an uproar after POLITICO reported the solicitation, Weymouth and Executive Editor Marcus Brauchli both said today that they were not aware of the flier or the specifics of what it offered.

I am astounded by the number of people, including on this forum, who will quote the mainstream media as if it were gospel. As if those lobbyists don't expect something more than a few drinks and a meal for their cool quarter-million.
Alternative media comes much closer to the unvarnished truth. |

I've decided not to renew my FT subscription for the same reason I ditched every other paper I've subscribed to. What is written in these MSM broadsheets does not always (often) reflect reality. With the FT they always use "economists" from government or banks (or a select few propagandists like Krugman).
Now the WaPo ups the ante. This is pretty disgusting stuff. |

I actually find the FT Alphaville blog to be pretty useful. I still subscribe to the WSJ, but Murdoch has turned its opinion pages into a republican/democrat pissing contest. Whether or not it reflects reality or not seems besides the point when Review and Outlook has become so predictable; I already know what they are going to say before I even up the paper. Time to ditch the Journal you think?
My preferred media sources:
FT Alphaville
Zero Hedge
LoL Fed
Reason Hit & Run
Cato @ Liberty Blog
I like a lot of these blogs as they filter a lot of the nonsense going on in the MSM and provider a broader context. I don't know, there are just so many media out there that the old media (MSM) seem to be losing out to these new sources, hopefully. |

I am astounded by the number of people who will quote any media as if it were gospel. That goes double for random articles on the internet. Fringe media and bloggers are no better than the "mainstream media," they just happen to be driven by a different agenda, and have substantially more motivation to post crazy rubbish (namely, because it gets them noticed).
Yes, the mainstream media lies and twists things. So do bloggers and lesser-known news sources. |

Zero Hedge is by far the best financial site around.
Take this post as an example:
http://www.zerohedge.com/article/h-rodgin-cohens-failed-quest-backstop-every-bank-ever-and-usurp-geithners-throne
You will never, ever, ever see anybody in the normal media take down the government-financial industry with such aggression, cynicism and accuracy. Why would I continue to pay 270$/yr for the FT just to get bankster propaganda inserted in my brain. ZH is free, better and reality based.
Give Mish, The Market Ticker and Naked Capitalism a try. They're quite good too.
Pluto, you have any leads on financial/macro podcasts? I haven't made any changes to my lineup in a while. |

Well said. I, too, remain astounded by the number of people who seem to define "alternative" as "unvarnished truth" and accept it entirely at face-value and uncritically.
People ought to think about what they read on a case-by-case basis. No more, no less. |

Interesting, so benny's on his way out, or at least others are being vetted for his position.

Haven't seen anything lately. But Mish is good, so is NC. Although every time I read NC, I feel like I'm getting punched in the gut. |

| You ought to listen to Financial Sense Newshour. 3-4 hours every weekend. It is unmatched in depth. Can be found as a podcast. |
