Brodeur and Luongo are as close to a sure thing as goaltending goes; one of them might be a controversial absence, though I doubt it.

Fleury has almost no chance with both of his team's top shutdown defenseman moving to other teams this week (Gill and Scuderi).

I suspect Ward or Mason will be the odd man out but really it'll depend on the first couple of months of the season.

And who starts totally depends on who's on a hot streak.

Niedermayer and Pronger are veteran locks to make the team. The future HHOFers are simply solid. Phaneuf makes the team too.

Beauchemin and Hamhuis have quietly been impressive the last few years and I'd be totally surprised if at least one of these two don't make the team.

Bouwmeester and Green have been inconsistent last season, with Green going from an NHL record goal scoring streak to getting benched for poor defensive play in the playoffs. ONE and only one of them will likely make the team, for the powerplay, - if Boyle doesn't steal the spot - but don't expect them to log more than 10-12 minutes a game.

Brent Seabrook does everything and even has size and toughness and recent playoff scoring excellence and thus has to be considered a good bet to take the sixth spot on the blueline.

Shea Weber and Duncan Keith will be Team Canada regulars in the future, and maybe even Drew Doughty might become something, but they have to play their heart out to have a chance to make this roster.

Stephane Robidas, Marc Staal and Robyn Regehr don't make this team, the latter not needed as the blueline has enough size and toughness led by Pronger and Phaneuf.

Crosby, Getzlaf, and Selke finalist Richards will be pivots on the team guaranteed (though Richards might play wing especially for the pk).

Lecavalier should be a lock but last season he was off a bit and if that continues he might find himself outplayed for one of the four center ice slots on the team.

If Carter plays like last season he'll be hard to not play, and I expect him to be looked at long and hard over the first couple of months.

One of Staal, Thornton or Sakic might be extra centers squeezing a couple of centermen onto the wing. I want at least two of them but the fact is there is limited room and there won't be eight centers picked like in the disasterous '98 olympics.

Heatley makes the team as a pure finisher unless his attitude over the Sens 'trade me' fiasco affects his scoring early in the season.

Iginla is the other winger who's a lock for the team.

St. Louis is simply too hard working, too fast and too good at passing and consistent in his performances not to make this team. The smart money has gotta be on him making it.

Perry was so dominant on Getzlaf's wing last season and postseason that they will be re-united for the tourney if they keep it up.

Nash at first glance is an 'of course' selection but if a team is built on more than all-star offense, he might find himself the odd man out. He's on the margin.

Gagne is competing with Perry and Nash as all three won't make this team unless all-offense is the order of the day, which it isn't.

Lucic can smile because there's little competition in terms of what he brings to the team, especially since the olympics will be on an NHL size surface this time, and his muscling along the boards will be valued. I expect him to make the team as a fourth liner. All he has to do is not blow it early in the season and the spot's his.

Smyth and Doan are team canada heroes and I wouldn't be surprised if one of them plays their way onto the team. They have earned the trust to come through in a clutch for the national team, the question will be their level of play in october and november of the 09/10 NHL season. If neither of them, then Morrow has a snowball chance.

Poor Marleau! He is clutch for the Sharks but is marginal in tourneys and I'd be surprised but happy if he makes this team. I think not.

Roy or McDonald only make this team as penalty killers if management thinks it's a priority. Richards could move to wing and rob both of these guys of a chance at all.

Patrick Sharp and Jonathan Toews get invited to camp to familiarize them with it as they are the future. But neither should make this team.

Cleary? no. Yzerman put the Wing on the camp roster out of loyalty but no way he is one of the 12 selected. No way.

(whew! took me over an hour to write this up. i've watched a lot of hockey thanks to nhl.com where for under two hundred dollars you can get online, live, great streaming quality, unlimited access to over 90% of regular season games and every playoff game. living in korea is easier being able to watch my fav sport in the morning here/evening back home before going to my afternoon hagwon gig)

Brodeur probably makes it but I'm not convinced he'll be the backup to Luongo. I wouldn't be surprised if he's the thrid string. His game has gone downhill.

Sakic brings leadership. Brodeur, as much as I dont like him (homewrecker) was sick when he came back from injury this year. He had 3 shutouts in 4 games if I am not mistaken. He wanted Roy's record badly.

What I am surprised about is Chris Philips, Wade Redden and Jason Spezza not getting a tryout? Especially Spezz and Redden.

Sakic and Iginla won Gold for Canada in 2002. Joe has been injured the last two years, though just a year ago scored 10 points in 10 playoff games. At camp his physical conditioning, health and chemistry with the others can be gauged. A closer look is exactly what's needed with him, a long with a great start to the 09/10 NHL season. Can he still skate? He has superior hockey sense and his legendary wrist shot shouldn't lessen much with age.

Rolling Eyes All three were overrated as Ottawa Senators.

Spezza is lazy at times and brings nothing extra to the table that a half dozen other centers ahead of him on the depth chart do; Marc Savard would be a better choice and even he just can't cut it.

Those two dmen are well known in their strengths and weaknesses and their upsides are limited, whereas a couple of the young invites have question marks in terms of upside that might impress upon closer scrutiny. Certainly neither Chris nor Wade are top-4 material on the national team and hence were marginal considerations to begin with.
