Children's answers to exams can be funny in any country and I expect it is not uncommon for there to be more to laugh at when students are students are doing a foreign language exam i.e. English. Here are some answers that amused me from a test my students did today:

It usually weighs about 5-6 kilograms and is very juicy so it's a favorite fruit during the summer season. It is green with black stripes. It has so many seeds in it. What is it?

Student answer: hamster

It's almost impossible to see this during the daytime. It changes its shape every 30 days. This goes around the earth. The earth goes around the sun. This is the closest satellite to the earth. Astronaut Armstrong was the first man who stepped on this planet.

Student answer: carrot

It is in your mouth. Its color is a kind of reddish. It is very important for people because we use it to taste food and to talk.

Student answer: thong

Does anyone have any other questions and answers to share?

One of the essay questions I had asked the students to write a story about what would happen if it really rained cats and dogs. Before the exam began, I explained the concept of raining cats and dogs to the students. While grading their essays, I came across one student's paper that said it would be a great day if that happened. Care to guess at his reasoning? Because everyone would have a great new pet cat, and no one would go hungry. I cried a little inside.

dogs taste great. I'm sure if you said no one would go hungry if it rained steak and hamburgers, some Indian guy would cry a little inside too.

I'd cry,

because I wouldn't have enough exqusite A1 steak sauce to fill my watery mouth from all the delicious dog and cow overflowing my tastebuds.

hmm. Actually I guess it would depend what kind of dog. I wonder how domestic dogs would taste?

(insert large cloud bubble here)

Technically this answer is as good as anything else the kid could have written.

Popular opinion declares eating dogs to be repulsive, as 95% of the world's population considers them to be part of the family. Korea obviously agrees with this sentiment to some degree, seeing as how selling dog meat has been illegal for 25 years (though it's apparently regulated as well as the education industry). Hindus are the only people in the world who revere cattle (and no other animals) as sacred and (nearly) untouchable. Majority rules.

Hmm, I don't think majority opinion is a venerable avenue in order to justify or unjustifiy actions.

For example, the large majority of humantiy used to believe that the world was flat. A large majority of humans believe in abstract ideas of luck and the existence of supersition without any logical validation.

In defense of dog consumption:

1) Domesticated dogs are very different form the Korean eating dogs. If you've ever seen the dogs Koreans eat... they look closer to hyenas than dog or wolf.

2) People don't like eating dogs (even a large majority of Koreans) because of the "pet issue". They've grown akin to dogs because they actually have siimilar pack like and emotional chracteristics like man. Which explains why we have a common bond and grow attached to them (I could go into the science, but if you look up dog/wolf behavior, we have very similar social tendencies. )

3) There is no logical reason besides emotion to not eat dogs. Having a pet and eating one of the same specicies should not logically make one feel bad. I can have a pet fish and still eat fish and chips.

4) Farmers have "pets" all the time, pigs, chickens, and ducks. What makes dogs exempt in the animal kingdom from being what's for dinner? Don't you feel bad for betsy the pig who's been your loyal companion for so many years? Frying her up in that skillet while you feed her to your dog rex? What makes a pig and dog so different (Yeah I know that conflicts with #2 but just entertain me lol)

Keep in mind, I could just as easily argue that eating dogs is cruel and inhumane. There are both good points on this issue. I just like eating dog. It's delicious.

They look like skinny chows to me. ...but that's beside the point. So it's only okay to eat ugly animals?

This really doesn't make any sense as a defense for eating dog meat. Dogs are companions, ergo we don't eat them.

That's what I tell folks who give me strange looks when I eat my soylent green burgers.

I'm vegan; I win this one.

No, there's really not. Koreans started eating dogs when they were dirt poor and starving. Most stopped after they were able to feed themselves with better food options. Only the idiotic and asinine continue to eat dog meat.

Okay, good for you. How does it feel to be a repulsive member of this population?

That statement is false. The dogs finding their way into the cooking pot in this country are quite often stolen pets.

Plenty of us who don't like "dog eating culture" in Korea are against it because of the intentional cruelty of the practice: making the animal suffer so the diner can magically (so the diner believes) get stamina or virility.

Actually, the number one logical reason, I'd think, to be against the consumption of dog in Korea is the intentional cruelty of the practice.

The other animals you mention are slaughtered humanely and the practice is regulated even in Korea. The slaughtering and cooking of dog in this country is completely unregulated.

To the OP's question:

I had an assignment where the students had to write dialog for a murder trial. At the end they got a little crazy:

Lawyer: How often do you kill people?
Defendant: At least 2 each week.
L: What is your favorite food?
D: Human flesh.
L: can you speak Korean?
A: um .. a little
L: [some hangul question]
A: OK, I lied.
