A few months ago one of the brilliant mods had an idea for a mentor program to help new arrivals. (Was it waterbaby?) I think this would be a good idea. Someone who has been here a long time could help someone in the same neighborhood do things like get a subway card, etc. This would obviously be mainly for those who are the only foreigner in a school or who live alone. (It could also be for those who 1. Don't like the other foreigners in his or her school or 2. Realize that some have us have been here longer than all of those other foreigners put together and may have something to add.)

I volunteer to help anyone who lives next to Kangnam Station.

good idea?

(If not I'll put my tail between my rear legs, extinguish my flame, and crawl into my dragon hole.)

As a newbie to Korea, I for one say it's a great idea.

I could help from the west end of Daegu. I had that when I arrived, by way of our program assistant, who did everything but wipe our noses for us (and I am NOT volunteering for that duty.) It made our lives so much easier.

Its such a good idea.

I think this was an initiative of Rike's, but sadly she's not around anymore. She'd collected people in different areas and people with different skills, experiences, specialities and/or interests. (Eg who's good with computers, who's a gyopo teaching English, who knows the music scene etc.)

I think it's a great idea and thanks kangnamdragon for bringing this up again.

If anyone is willing to be a contact for people coming to a new area ~ drop your name here and I'll compile a list of ID's and locations and make it a sticky.

Several people have mentioned the need for newbies to have support, myself included last August, and at least two others before that. Kuddos all go to Kangnamdragon for getting the ball rolling on a national scale. Local support can be gained through foreigners clubs in smaller cities but for those who fall through the cracks or need extra support:

I'll gladly be a Welcome Wagon for those new to Geoje Island and Tongyoung, and southeastern Gyeongsamnamdo locales within an hour of there.

Thank you for everyone's interest. Yes, now I remember it was Rike's idea. Good memory Waterbaby. Put me on the list for Kangnam Station. (I mean I live about a 5 minute walk away.) so I am close to many school. I am a pre-IMF foreigner.

On second thought, while it's a good idea, doesn't it kind of take the fun out of everything. The adventure anyway.

Why? When I was a newbie I had to find my own way. I think it builds character. Let the newbies figure it out themselves.

... or not.

I guess that means tokki's not volunteering his services. Shocked

Anyone else interested? I'd volunteer by I'm leaving in 3.5 weeks!
