The Michael Jackson orgy of coverage continues. Last week it accounted for 60% of all mainstream news coverage, according to the Nielsen Ratings. This week might surpass that figure.
Just think of it: If a major world leader was assassinated right now he'd likely take a back seat to coverage over Jackson.
An hour ago I turned to CNN International: MJ. Then HLN: MJ. Then MSNBC: MJ. Surely FoxNews would be talking about something else. Nope. And when they did finally cut away to that incidental presidential trip to Russia, they kept a cutaway of fans waiting outside the Staples Center in LA for his memorial. Same with ABCNews.
But of course, I knew SkyNews would be different: No, only MJ's family procession to the cemetery. Ah, at least one can count on the source of hard news: the BBC. More Jackson followed by a tidbit about the Urumqi massacre followed by more Jackson coverage on "Hard Talk."
Please someone, wake me up when it's over. Maybe, if we're lucky, after they lower his coffin in the grave.
I know one thing for sure: right now about four miles of backed up traffic on a 5 lane highway near Encino, California sure as hell wish it would end. The funeral procession of countless vehicles was given 30 minutes to enter the highway, a massive police escort and even a support helicopter. Gee, I bet O.J. Simpson is seething with jealousy in jail right about now.
Wake up, people! This is an entertainer. Yes, a superstar singer but an entertainer nonetheless and a man whose personal life was a freak show.
Elections in Indonesia, riots in Xinjiang, Obama meeting Putin in Moscow, health care legislation, etc. Guess these don't count half as much as a person who spent an estimated half billion dollars on himself, hired his nanny to carry kids he didn't even contribute the sperm for, and doctors to administer illegal drugs to him on a whim. (Even Obama reminded today in an interview of MJ's dark side).
It has been said that MJ was the King of Pop. He's also emblatic in the most ironic and pathetic of ways of pop culture.
P. Diddy gets the award for hyperbole, claiming MJ did more for Obama to get into office than anyone else. Oh, really? So MLK had nothing on MJ, eh? Another commentator claimed that Jackson opened up African American music to Whites and the world. Oh, really? So Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong were just chopped liver? And MoTown of the 60s wasn't able to cross over racial lines? Oh, but wait, MJ was the first Black singer on MTV.
Ah, the MTV Generation, that's who were hearing most of these outlandish statements of praise from. A generation without a clue as to the musical legacy MJ inherited. Yes, but he reshaped the industry! Yes, I suppose Quincy Jones, the producer of Thriller, had little to do with it, eh?
Enough is enough aw-ready.
The nauseating soap opera, "As the World Churns," continues.
But when oh when will it end?
Seriously, am I the only one that is disgusted by this relentless, often fawning, seldom introspective, slobbering media coverage? |

Still a slave to the TV, eh?
It's called an aggregator. Yes, there's an entertainment section, but I feel I have quite a nice throttle on what news I want, kinda the way I can just scroll past your splurges.
After commenting on one MJ thread, you started another, no?
How many Iran threads you been on? |

"Nowhere man, please listen, take your time...the world is at your command"
Just can't believe no one has registered irritation over this undue coverage.
Of course, I get news from other media sources, but thanks for playing. |

What coverage?
http://news.google.com/
There are two MJ's out of a good 50 choices.
Throttle, Steve. Throttle.
Oh right, you're still fiddling with an antenna on your roof... |

You mean you arent glued to the screen to see if MJ is going to leap out of his coffin with the song Thriller playing - and it all be revealed as a publicity stunt?
Love him or hate him .. this is one of those 'where were you when' moments.

1) A media-gasm of the political left.
2) It sells. They're issuing "tickets" to his memorial for gawd's sakes. For the same reason that people slow down to look at an accident scene. 90% of MJ conversations among normal people in a bar for example, *not* on tv, are discussing his freakishness: he was found not guilty, although sleeping with children is deviant nevertheless. He had 23 plastic surgeries, and DESPERATELY tried to hide them. He turned a billion dollar estate into a massive debt.
An insane idiot with $1 Billion will inevitably make strange decisions. MJ's life is an embarassment and should not be celebrated. |

| 1.6 million people applied for the 20 thousand tickets to his memorial. Downtown LA is on lockdown. |

Agree, agree. Great music, though. |

I dunno. Maybe it's a media-gasm, and the media is more left-wing than the average Joe. But, when he was alive, I think politicians across the spectrum were eager to latch onto Jackson's pop-culture prestige.

The President. Well, isn't this a thriller? [Laughter] I'm delighted to see all of you here today. We haven't seen this many people since we left China. And just think, you all came to see me. [Laughter]
No, I know why you're here, and with good reason -- to see one of the most talented, most popular, and most exciting superstars in the music world today -- Michael Jackson.
And, Michael, welcome to the White House. I hope you'll forgive me, but we have quite a few young folks in the White House who all wanted me to give you the same message. They said to tell Michael, ``Please give some TLC to the PYTs.'' [Laughter] Now, I know that sounds a little off-the-wall, but you know what I mean. [Laughter]
And, Michael, I have another message from our fans in the Washington, DC, area. They said, we want you back. So, when you begin your greatly awaited crosscountry tour, will you please be sure to drop off here in the Nation's Capital?
Well, down to business. We're gathered here to mark the progress of a shared endeavor and to commit ourselves to an even greater national effort, as Elizabeth told you. On April 14th of 1982, I created a Presidential Commission on Drunk Driving. And since that date, real progress has been made. States have passed tougher laws, arrests and enforcement have been stepped up, and citizens across our country are taking a stronger stand against the tragedies caused by drinking and driving.

Michael Jackson is proof of what a person can accomplish through a lifestyle free of alcohol or drug abuse. People young and old respect that. And if Americans follow his example, then we can face up to the problem of drinking and driving, and we can, in Michael's words, beat it.

| Anybody notice that blacks are trying to reclaim him? Odd, no? He had a white guy donate white sperm to put in a white women so his kids would be white. |

You very well might be; it doesn't disgust me because I don't watch TV with any frequency. With the internet availible to selectively view the news which interests you, why pay attention to the rest of it? It's there for the common man who enjoys such spectacles, not for you.
If you decide to go visit a playground, expect to see kids playing stupid games and doing annoying things. The same applies to television. |

| I lost a lot of respect once I saw MJ couldn't spell. Maybe he never read anything noteworthy nor tried to self-improve - only express his own (very limited) take of the World. |
