Hello one and all,
Will try to keep this brief. difficult.
Thanks in advance for all responses, especially first-hand knowledge ones.
I live in the states. I have a BA in Philosophy, 6 years corporate-world experience, and ten years of EFL experience in Spain (privates and acadamies).
Closely-Related Questions:
1. When job listings in Korea mention "TESOL" or "TEFL" certification, does the reference include online courses lacking a practical teaching component?
2. Should i spend $300-400 for an online TESOL/TEFL program of 100 hours before coming to Korea? Will I be asked about the nature of my TESOL certificate and the fact that it did not involve practical teaching?
3. Will my real-world teaching experience (thousands of contact hours) count for something when considered by an employer in conjunction with an online, 100-hour certificate course?
4. I am totally willing to attend a TESOL, with a practical element, once in Korea. However, I'd like to get hired to a higher-paying job to start with. Has anyone ever negotiated attendance of TEFL training after arrival and been hired to the higher-paying qualifications beforehand?
thanks again. have a great summer y'all!!!!!!!!

Ramen - wow! thanks for that lightning-fast reply.
A follow up for you or anyone else out there in cyberland.
Regarding accreditation of online courses, any comments welcomed:
ACCET - endorses Bridge courses; recognized by US Dept. of Education
ITAA - International Tesol Accreditation Agency
IADL - both of these entities endorse Lingua Edge online courses
ACTDEC
ODLQC - open distance learning quality council
Thanks!!!

I reccomend doing a cheesy online coure google 100 hour tesol class and ull get a bunch of cheap courses. Koreans dont care they just want to see a stupid certificate. and dont wait until your here that was my mistake. Do it now so you can sign for more money. I lost about $2,000 starting at a lower level cause i didnt do a stupid tesol class |

I'm doing a course through ITTT and it's only $195.00 US and I'll be making that amount more EACH month for having this certificate.
Additionally, while it is mind-numbing dull work to get through, it is a helpful refresher for all the grammatical items I suspect we'll be expected to teach.
My recommendation is to go with the cheapest course b/c they (in Korea) won't care where it's from, just so long as you have one. |
