The Seoul Times has organized two trips to the upcoming Seodong Lotus Festival. All interested foreigners and Koreans are welcome to join in this exciting cultural event. The trip is scheduled for July 18 (Saturday), 2009.
The festival, which celebrates the beautiful lotus flowers and the importance of preserving wild flowers, will be held in Buyeo, a town 2 hours outside Seoul in the South Chung-Cheong Province. It is the ancient capital of Baekje Dynasty.
Participants will marvel at Gungnamji pond, the oldest artificial pond in Korea, and its stock of white, red, and water lotuses. The blossoms will be in full bloom during the summer, creating a colorful spectacle not to be missed.
There will also be lotus string crafts, face painting, earthenware making, fan making, soap making, and other traditional arts. Participants can try their hand at these or admire the handiwork from the side.
Visitors should come hungry as they will have the opportunity to sample local fare such as memilmukbap, a combination of buckwheat paste and spicy kimchi, along with rice and numerous side dishes. Later on lotus tea will be served at a tea ceremony. Those attending on July 18 will also get to make dasik, small Korean tea cakes, and other traditional sweets.
There is also the Buyeo National Museum which is devoted to the culture of the Baekje Kingdom. The museum teaches about this influential dynasty and houses over 15,000 relics such as pottery, incense burners, and tiles that give a glimpse into Korean history. After we finish exploring the museum around 4:30, and we will begin the journey back to Seoul.
